The Vapor-X is significantly cooler and quieter, well worth the few extra bucks if you can find one IMO.

They are not that much cooler, those graphs are where the fan is held at 21%, up it to 28% (still quiet) and it drops another 8'c or so (as an idea, mine is 13'c cooler than that chart at both idle and load).

In terms of performance, its a meager OC on the Vapor-X so its down to the individual whether its worth the extra cash or not

That is actually quite an impressive jump in performance for such a pitiful OC.

Think of the scaling when you inevitably get the card up to 1ghz.

That judgement is impossible to make as the individual perception of what "quiet" means vary wildly.

No doubt if you can stand the original cooler then running it at a higher level is another option, though I'd still say that the Vapor-X is very much worth the money.

As for the argument regarding rear-exhaust venting that have little impact unless you're running an exceptionally confined case or one with poor airflow.

I've used an original 4870 as well as the Vapor-X one and the latter does significantly better regarding both temperature and noise. The reviews I've read of the 5870 leads me to believe the differences are similar, which is why I'd recommend it.

agreed, the 5850 looks to perform nearly on par at 5870 clocks (from reviews I've seen) so looks like the extra SPs will only make a nice difference at 900Mhz+

The OC is only 20 MHz on the core and 50 on the mem right? Don't forget that when you OC the card let's say 5 MHz on the core, that the 320 clusters of 5 will be running 5 MHz more!
The same goes for the memory. 10 Mhz increase in clock means 40 MHz effective!

When you take a 5870 tot 1GHz core, 1600 shaders (320 clusters of 5) will be true powerhorses!

I agree that judgements are subjective, and being a 5870 owner I am expressing my opinion, whilst you can only rely on the opinion of another (the reviewer) as you do not own neither a 5870 standard or Vapor-X (according to your sig).

The point I was trying to make, is that the 5870 is a cool card anyway and with a slight fanspeed increase (which in my opinion is still very quiet) you can achieve the same temps as the Vapor-X, and that the OC on the Vapor-X is so small that perfomance can be brought in line.

All in all, my opinion (note the key word here) is that the Vapor-X is NOT worth the extra cash:

Vapor-X at £379 versus Asus (the next most expensive) at £318

£61 for what may be a slightly better temp / noise at stock + small OC.

i think i have to agree with u...too small diff for extra bucks and not so protected design as other 5870...gonna give credit just for the cooling..

Indeed, the real question is "at what price difference".

I haven't shopped around because frankly it's almost impossible to find a 5870 as it is, any 5870.

However, if we go by previous generations standards then it's likely the Vapor-X version will either fully replace the standard model or end up being sold for almost the same amount. Once we have common availability at least.

For the equivalent $100 or so I'd definitely not go for it myself but I quite likely would if the price difference is $50 or less.

Then again I'm incredibly anal about noise so YMMV.
