Nice, but didn't you read that the 250 is really just an updated 9800GTX+? You just bought the same card you already had :-/

Doesn't detect the 9800GT as some fancy new revision, and there i was getting my hopes up for something utterly unspectacular

Hmm, Release date on your GPU-Z screenshot.. "Apr 01, 2008"..
Wrong year, right day April fools?
Just kidding, maybe the new drivers see the 9800GTX+ and GTS250 as the same cards now?

Hopefully these won't cause L4D to randomly crash like the 182.06 and 182.05 did. Will report back later.

No, really. It's possible but because of different hardware ids you have to force install GTS 250 driver manually via device manager. Haven't tested but I think that you could install GeForce 9800 GT driver for 8800 GT. It's a known fact that GPU-Z doesn't recognize 55nm G92 cards correctly.
GTS 250 drivers work just fine as you can see. They should make a bios that change adapter string.

I know I was just kidding, as I said I was
I'm not sure whether to try these new driver or not. I've been on 181.22's for a while now and everything works just fine and I'm not sure if I 'd see any benefit as my cards are becoming fairly old tech now..
I'll stick with what I've got for now and just maybe upgrade in the summer

You should try them, they should offer a nice performance boost over 181.22's. I have had zero problems so far with these drivers.

i cant believe that they still didnt freaking fix the CODE 43 error when installing the last few sets of of 180X.XX drivers on Geforce 6 and 7 series. I even tried this one after performing a cleaning with the Guru Driver Cleaner and still same issue. I think nVidia should remove driver support for 6 and 7 if they dont intend on fixing there bugs on the next release that is.
Summary: These driver dont work on GeForce 6 and 7 series - they install sucessfully, but on reboot CODE 43 shows up in Device Manager
Solution: back to 178.24 driver
