Hi!
I was just wondering, for the moment I've got a 4870 512mb and I want to put an other 4870 in XF and I would like to know, should I put a 4870 1gb or it will be limited so I'll be best with the 512mb version
Thx

No, if you use Crossfire or SLI, your vram doesn't add up. I don't know if you can crossfire 512MB and 1GB HD4870s but you still have 1GB or 512MB.

Not sure with Crossfire BUT with SLI it uses the lowest ram card as the amount you will get on the larger one, hence you would only get 512mb on each card despite one being 1gig.

5. What happens when graphics cards with varying memory speeds and engine clocks are paired together?
A. In this scenario, overall performance will be adjusted to match the memory speeds and engine clocks of the lower clocked card. To obtain ideal performance, graphics cards should be paired correctly.

Gotten from ATI's site, one would assume it goes for memory ammount aswell.

No matter how much cards are getting crossfired, always the weakest part of the chain does count, it doesnt stack in no way.

lol GTA4 would run smooth if they just fixed like a 1000 problems it has but two HD4870 would run very well in most games including GTA4

As far as I know if you have two 512mb cards in crossfire you'll have a total of 1GB memory. It's only when you have a 512mb card and a 1GB card paired it will slow down, because the 512mb can't go up to 1GB.
I think that's how it works anyway.. because the 4870X2's have 2GB and it's just two 1GB version 4870's. I could be wrong though..

ok i will explain a bit
when you crossfire two HD 4870's 512MB it is Cloned memory not pooled memory so you only have two 512MB clones not 1GB memory that you can use.
so in total you have a max vram of 512MB
hope that clears things up a bit
also i can not stress enough that you will not need 1GB card to run gta4 on full with decent frames i mean unless your going over 1900x1200 ...just wait for driver updates and patchs for the game

Like the above person mentioned, you still have 1GB of video memory if you crossfire two 1GB HD4870s. At the moment, HD4870X2 has access to a maximum of 1GB of video memory, unless AMD decides to open up the sideport. All those cards that you see, like 7950GX2, HD3870X2, or 9800GX2 that shows 1GB of video memory in front of the box are all marketing and bunch of lies.
