Maybe a different graphic card driver?

Did you install the latest game patches?

yeah there was only one patch i think it was 1.1 have it installed. Yeah maybe a different driver but i dont think that is the problem. I tried to install it on my other SLI 8800GTX rig the same warning comes up. I think its Vista but im sure ther is a workaround. Someone out there knows.

This is a problem for all newer OS's after Windows XP. The ways I have been told to fix it are the following:

1) IF you are able to change the AGP Aperture Size (it could be labeled as AGP Memory or Video Memory also) in the BIOS, go ahead and change it to 256.

2) If you cannot do step 1, go to run or start menu and type msconfig. Once there go to the Boot tab, then down to Advanced Options. Check where it says Maximum memory and set it to 2GB. Restart your system and once it comes up you should be able to play the game without texture problems. DO NOT forget to change Max memory back to what it was once you are done and restart it again after that is done. Otherwise some applications will not run properly.

To fix the videos in game for only appearing black, do the following:

1) Find your Heroes of Annihilated Empires directory and go to the Data folder. Once in the Data folder, right-click on engine.exe and go to properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and check "Disable desktop composition". Now the video clips work fine for me this way, but if they still do not work, try also checking "Run this program as an administrator".

These are the only fixes I know of that work currently for the vanilla version. I know it is a pain and I truthfully believe that once the problem became noticed during Vista, the developers should have found a work around or patch, but obviously that never happened. I am currently working on trying to get a work around using memory altering applications. IF I had access to the source code for the engine and game, I probably could find a way to create a better work around, but it was never released as far as I know. If this does not work for you, I apologize, but this is the only way I have seen the full version of the vanilla version work somewhat properly.
