Yes it is.
That line means that Windows will search for drivers in the %SystemRoot%\inf folder first for hardware. Usually this is c:\windows\inf.

This guide is for those who want more control of what drivers are installed and when. If you have had many installation problems or missing file messages then this is the one for you. If you have never had a conflict or unusual driver behavour then Rumples guide should do fine.

Here it what I did to remove 40.41:

I Used Add/Remove program, and then before rebotting my comp, I opened regedit, deleted all files (in local user/software and current user/software) associated with nvidia, and then rebooted...Installed 30.82s, everything runs smoothly, however, I looked in the program file folder and what do I see? The old nvidia folder with the 40.41 drivers. I installed the 30.82s on C: and not in Program folders where the 40.41s were. Anyhow, I tried deleting the nvidia folders (40.41) via regedit, rebooted, and they still aren't removed. Any help is appreciated.

YES I do-
Run Regedit and navigate to this key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
entVersion
Note the locations entered in the "Device Path".
Check these locations and if not included check these also.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ReinstallBackups (allsubfolders)
C:\DRIVERS\VIDEO (for Dell Systems)
C:\WINDOWS\Inf (should be the first entry in the device path)

Delete any nv3.inf/pnf, nv4.inf/pnf or nv4_disp.inf files found here.

In my inf folder I did have some nv.3.inf/pnf and nv4_disp.inf files before. But when trying other drivers out and i use this method I cannot find these any more. But i do see other nv files , should these also be deleted. I believe they do pertain to nvidia but do not have the nv3 or nv4 name to it.

Should all files pertaining to nvidia be deleted even though no nv3 or nv4 is associated with it. Thanks.

Default Still Troubled with XP driver installation... - 10-22-2002, 01:36 | posts: n/a

Can Someone Answer Nut? I have the same question. I've followed the Jnive procedure to the letter only to have XP still install its own driver... I even took out the Device path location in it's entirety (leaving only the c:\Windows\Inf).

This is ridiculous! I wish Microsoft or nvidea would publish these things!

Any advice?

I had a similar problem. No matter what I deleted in my INF folder or in my registry, XP would install drivers automatically. It turns out that XP was downloading drivers from the internet and installing them automatically. All I did was disconnect my cable internet connection, delete everything as discussed in these threads, and viola, the "New hardware found" wizard popped up and I finally, after months of trying, had a clean install of nVidia drivers.

Firstly Caveman -- Windows\inf IS the default auto-install folder for XP. Secondly I only have a dial-up connection so I wasnt aware of XP ringing home for drivers.

To stop this then before you reboot -- go start>run>services.msc /s
then double click on "Remote Connection Manager" and set it to disabled. Then after you reboot XP should be unable to establish a network connection. After your install just reset the above sevice to automatic.

Hope this helps.

Should I uninstall the current Det and restart, letting windows install the old driver then follow this guide?
I don't quite understand steps 2 and 3 completely. The device path in my registry reads %systemroot%\inf;SystemDrive\HPDRIVERS\KEYBOARD
My system is homemade but I'm using the keybaord of an old hp and I dled drivers for it to work completely..
And I think the sticky should be updated with that auto dl update part.
