I used to love the intros to the games. The 3DFX logo etc. Great fun.

Glide is great. I still run a machine with a Voodoo5 5500 AGP and still have fun playing all the old games. But I don't hook it up much.

Went looking through all my old video cards. LOL I found some I forgot I had. 2 Voodoo5 5500 AGP's dead. 2 still in the box sealed. 3Voodoo4 4500 AGP 4 Voodoo3 3000 AGP Voodoo Banchie AGP. Got them on sale after 3dfx went down. I paid $99 apiece for the V5's and $45 for the V4's.

For the games that support Glide, it is indeed the best. But as it isn't supported in any new games (or most old ones for that matter) ......

In it's time it was fantastic. It was an very forward looking API. Lots of post processing effects built right in, effects like motion blur which we've only begun to start to see in DirectX. It's too bad we never got to see it develop further. But unfortunately 3Dfx bit off more than it could chew.

It was also only the 3dfx cards that could use it. It would only hurt sales of games if supported just glide, no mater how good it was, and it would mean higher developing cost i guess if they would also add support for other APIs if the company wasn't familiar with it.

Most games back then were optimized for Glide. It was an easier option for game developers. It was also made with OpenGL or DirectX. You always had the option to switch to 3dfx Hooked up my 3dfx machine and been using it the last couple of weeks. Even games like Carnivores look much better in Glide.

LOL, how I envy you, I wish we still had our Voodoo 3 3500 and Voodoo Banshee

Unreal Tournament in Glide is unbeatable IMO (even better than OpenGL)

LOL It's not all that great, I use it mostly to play Unreal and a few other games.I would leave it hooked up more but, you can't do what an newer machine can. And I don't like Wi98. Still to many Blue screens of death. The Voodoo Banshee was a good little card, still have my old one.

I remember seeing these awesome screen shots of games, so I purchased them only to realise you needed a 3dfx accelerator to get the good stuff. DirectX and D3D just didn't cut it back then!

Got my Banshee and was in gaming heaven!

Actually the computer I type this on is powered by a PCI Voodoo 4

Playing NFS4, Fifa98 RTWC and Fifa2000 under Glide was just so silky smooth in its day compared to other systems struggling to keep up with Direct3D's overheads.

Also playing HalfLife with the WickedGL driver at 1024x768... another fond 3dfx memory.

Glide hit the wall because it was proprietary software but was also 3dfx ace up their sleeve. The catch 22 is make it available and you loose your golden bullet to competitors... keep it proprietary and game developers jump ship to D3D and OpenGL

3Dfx was a very good company. I used a Voodoo 2 and Voodoo Banshee. Although, when the Banshee came out the drivers were SERIOUS crap. But, they improved and it rocked (the Banshee was my first 2D/3D card, which back in the day was awesome!)

But, 3Dfx closed. I still don't know exactly why, but it was a shame. But, it's all good. Those of you using nVidia cards are still, in some way, using 3Dfx technology.

If I remember correctly, nVidia bought 3Dfx and a large majority of the employees and the technology (specifically the anti-aliasing, which was heralded as the best) is still in use today...so, they're not gone completely....:p

Just fried my Voodoo5 Lost my power supply, when I hooked up a new one as soon as it started up I hear a pop and saw fire and smoke. Shut it off and burned a hole in the board. Luckly I have 2 more. Can't figure out why that happened tho,for know I just put a Voodoo 4 4500 in it.

Well ok. Even though this is the 3dfx secrion
S3 was also a powerhouse at a time and they did give us S3TC.

yeah pity their last card was so crap. Can't even remember what it was called, but you know, the one that competed with Nvidia 6 series and Ati X series.

I still have a working Voodoo 3 AGP system, but I have to say I don't use it. I've tried using a good few games in Glide, but they look about the same as OpenGL. Was expecting something more to be honest.

3dfx didnt have a card that competed with Geforce 6 and the ATI X series. Nvidia gobbled up 3dfx before the GeforceFX came out....thus the name of the GPU was to celebrate the merge. IT was the first card they made as a whole company after the merge. GeforceFX was trial and error and they learned from that greatly. They went on to the 6 series together. Now they gobbled up AGEIA.

So now you technically have Nvidia/3dfx/AGEIA in one package. Interesting huh.

The last 3dfx competed with against nvidia/Ati was really the Voodoo 5 against the Geforce2/3 and late ATI 8xxx series and early ATI 9xxx series.

IN which the voodoo5 beat out the Geforce 2 in most apps but not all, and the ATI half was well meh...

I bless the day on which I bought my Voodoo Banshee, because the PC my dad had bought only had a crappy Savage integrated chip.

Not only Glide allowed me to play games at at least decent framerates (Unreal Tournament), but even Open GL performance was good (can never forget how bad Direct3D was compared to OpenGL in Half Life).

I wish I had an old rig like yours. Not just to play videogames that use the Glide API; I'd have it hooked up a good CRT monitor so that I wouldn't have to bother with games that don't have high-resolution and/or widescreen support.

I was talking about S3 as that's what the poster before me mentioned, sorry for the misunderstanding

Oh and in my post above I've now edited it to say 'Looked about the same as OpenGL'. I dunno what made me write XP at the time, must have been thinking of something else!
