Default AOL 9.0 slowing my internet connection???? - 05-24-2006, 04:04 | posts: 2,270 | Location: Memphis TN

Does anyone happen to know why when I access the internet with only Explorer using MSN that my connection speed is 4700Kbps BUT, when I access the internet using my AOL 9.0 that my average speed is only 1200Kbps?

This is very annoying considering I pay Time Warner cable $60.00 per month for their fastest connection. Then I pay AOL $15.00 per month for thier service only to have AOL's software turn my fast connection into a snail.

I have already tried removing and re-installing AOL 9.0 and every possible tip and tweek that 10 of their AOL tech's could come up with.

None of the things I try improves my speed while using my AOL.

Is it normal for AOL to have this negitive of an impact on my 4.5Gbps connection?

Well, the only reason I keep it is because I really like the AOL Music that gives me tons of XM radio stations. I have a nice sound system and I listen to XM music on it a lot. Plus I do like the Macaffe virus protection that come with my subscription to AOL.

Now I am thinking about dumping it because of this speed issue.

No. I have looked for anything on AOL that might mention limitations on speed and I can't find any.

It's not like it used to be when AOL used to provide the connection. Now AOL is strictly a browser service that uses your existing high speed connection no matter if it's from Time Warner or Comcast Ect...

Unfortunatly this problem I have can't be fixed by customer service. I'm starting to think it's just the AOL software.

Good Question. My actual connection is thru Time Warner, but I subscribe to AOL because I like the fact that with that subscription I get full Macafee virus protection from AOL. I also really like the AOL radio which gives me XM satillite radio on my computer - tons of channels. Other than that I really wouldn't care about keeping it.

My main question was, why is my internet connection speed reduced to 1.5Mbps when using AOL to search the net, but when I shut it down and just use Explorer I get 4.5 to 5Mbps??????

What is it about AOL that is slowing my connection??????

It's probably because you're connected through AOL's server at that point when you sign in and are limited to the speed that their server is running at. I do tech support for a broadband company and we always have customers calling in about problems with their AOL for broadband. Instead of signing into AOL and using their server, is there anyway you would be able to just sign into the section where the music is? Just wondering, I've never used AOL for broadband but I do know that AOL is problematic. You would think that AOL would work wonderfully with Time Warner's service though, seeing how Time Warner own's AOL, lol.

If you're paying for an AOL subscription just for the radio and the anti-virus then you may as well cancel your membership.

You can get Norton Antivirus for free from Google, and there are a number of other superior free alternatives as well.

For XM Radio, I would suggest purchasing a reciever ($29.99) and then just pay for an XM subscription - you'll be able to listen to it at home and in your car - a much better value than paying for AOL.

I know, I know. I'm almost ashamed to say that I even use AOL.

AOL is for people who don't know any better and I knew AOL sucked even before I started using it.

It's one of those weird things, where you get comfortable with your service even though it blows you just keep using it because it's whats familiar to you.

Sure I could get sat radio or just start downloading my music from Lime wire, but the AOL Radio is pretty cool. I also like the instant streaming news they have on their front page. And what about my email address! Everyone in the free world has this email address and If I change I will have a new address.

I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and dump it. AOL's mega sized software is constantly feeding gremlins to my hard drive.
