Question choosing a pci-e 6800 ultra - 09-29-2005, 13:33 | posts: 9

Hi everybody,
I'm looking to buy a new 3d card and i would like to softmod it .
I hesitate between these 2 models:
MSI PCIE NX6800 ULTRA-T2D256E-TV-Out/DVI
Leadtek WinFast PX6800 ultra TDH - 256 Mo TV-Out/DVI.
Of course i dont know the core used in these cards
Any help would be very appreciated.
thanks

phil

IMHO, all PCI-E 6800 Ultras have NV40 + HSI Bridges, so they will be able to be turned into Quadro performance mode (but the name will stay GeForce due to the HSI bridge chip having hardwired PCI-ID info)

NV40 + HSI Bridge = "NV45" (note the quotes)

Personally, I would save a little more cash and grab a 7800GT if you can. I dont think they are that much more, unless you are getting a really good deal on that ultra.

so basically every ultra is nv45, hence nv40, hence moddable? which pci-e cards might not be moddable (like based on different cores....)
PS i know a guy that has a gainward agp card and cant mod it, dunno if it might be heloful info
thanks a lot!!!

The thread starter specificaly requested a moddable card - 7800 cards are completely locked (unmoddable) so your advice is pretty much useless to him...

Can you tell us the exact model of the Gainward card in question? I would like to investigate further...
PCI-E cards that are not modable are all the newer models of 6200/6600/6800NU/7800

yes from the signature of the guy it is a gainward 6800 ultra agp / 2600 golden sample. if you want more info i can write to him. i know we were talking about pci-e cards here, but since i somewhere else red that ppl think every agp is moddable...
i think i will buy a point of view 6800 ultra pci-e then, apparently it should be moddable!

You should get that guy to post on the forums here.
Maybe the card is not a dud - he can be doing something wrong when he is attempting modding...

There are some 6800GTs with the NV48 chip, and i really don't know if those are modable or not...
