Does ATI Tray Tools always have to be open?

I'm not overclocking, but does any of the option changes in ATI Tray Tools require you to keep the program open?

Can I just change stuff, close it, and the options be saved?

Also what is Trilinear Filtering Optimization, AF Optimization, and Mip Map Filter?
