i'm new to networking, so bera with me. have had lots of trouble trying to get the system working.

i bought the dlink DI-604 router and have no idea how to get it to work. connected the dsl modem to router, and router to both pc's. ran through the router setup program, and nothing. does it matter what cable you use (ie, i bought rj45 cat5e straight through ethernet cable which i'm using right now through the dsl modem, but maybe it doesn't work with the router?). also, upgraded the firmware to the latest version, to no avail.

after you set up the router, what do you do next, ie, how do you connect to the net? do you go to network connections and set up an account, or what? i use dsl, so do i just go throught the same asp setup procedure for both pc's and create connections? i'm confused.

both pc's use win xp with sp1.

thanx for any help.

You want to use the cable supplied with your modem for the modem-router link as a few use different cable than straight-up cat-5. I assume you've set it up propertly for PPPoe, but you might want to set it up again (restore defaults and do over).

Maybe you have to use a crossover cat5 cable to connect the pc's to the router, I don't really know i've never used a router.
I just use the 2 nics in my comp and a nic in the 2nd comp and let win xp set it up for me

does the router get the ip address from the dsl modem?
and does the router lease the 2 pcs ip addresses?

in the instructions it should give u an ip address to plug into internet explorer to access the router config.
for my linksys its 192.168.0.1

when u access this make sure that dhcp is enabled in the router.
it should do the rest
