Anyone into knives (collecting/utility)? -
07-08-2012, 21:55
Been kinda getting into knives lately. The collectible ones and just to have them lol. They are interesting and it gets pretty complex it seems. Got myself a Gerber Remix for day to day use at work and whatnot and I like it alot. Kinda wish I would have got the one with the partial serrated edge but oh well. Also just got a Karambit that is pretty effin sweet. Been looking alot into Kershaw and Spyderco as alot of people on knife forums have alot of good things to say about them but I really dont like the way Spyderco knives look. They all look so......odd. I also got a nice outdoor 8 3/4" fixed blade that I keep in my car that would be perfect for camping and whatever else.
Ive also been looking into knife laws and holy crap, it seems that they are more strict than gun laws around here. It also varies from county to county....In Washington State the legal size for a pocket knife is 3.5" but if I go to Seattle it can only be 3" which is kind of silly. Even having that Survival knife in my car could get me a "gross misdameanor" if a cop is having a bad day. How would I take it camping if I cant even have it anywhere but home? There is so much grey area. And lets say I get mugged or something and use a knife that is bigger than 3.5" to defend myself and kill the guy....according to Washington State law, the fact that I even had a knife "that big" means I went out with the intent of doing bodily harm.
Anyways, talk to me about knives! This stuff is pretty neat.

I've got a few, got them from dealextreme, my fake gerber was like £4.
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/classy-...h-holster-9199

I did have a similar one with a serrated section of the blade but I lost it.

I used a relatively cheap 3.5" folding knife partly serrated for some of my army service. The best knife for the army is a Leatherman Wave or similar.
Most important thing to remember is not to spend a lot on a knife that you plan to treat harshly. I've seen some people buy expensive knives and then never use them for fear of damaging or losing them.
Right now I'm using a $10 Smith & Wesson CK5TBS Bullseye Extreme Ops 4.1" 40% Serrated Black Tanto Blade as a carry knife and reserve duty knife. It does the job just fine without the heavy price tag and I'm not worried about losing it or damaging it since it was only $10.

Are you effin kidding me? So your saying that in order for me to save my life, I cant use anything but my fists because then other people might think im a wimp?
Seriously, if someone tries to mug me and he/she pulls a knife or even a gun, having something to help leverage the chance of survival is more important than my ego.
That being said, when carrying self defense items (gun/knife/stick/whatever) a higher responsibility is required. Not to mention the heap of legal trouble you can get in. If I get into a fist fight, im not going to pull a friggin knife on the guy and go stab happy because im loosing. The minute you pull a knife or gun on someone who is unarmed, it goes from being a fight, to becoming combat in which you are now the assailant. Last time I checked, that gets you put in jail, and if you kill the guy, that puts you in jail for a very very long time and soap rape will happen while suffering a dildo wound to the mouth. Here in the US you need to be in "imminent danger" to use a deadly weapon. That dosent mean 5 seconds after or before. It dosent even mean if the person pulls a knife and is 20 feet from you. You arent in imminent danger until he is rushing you.
I do agree that there are alot of wimpy little douche bags out there that carry just for their ego or to look cool.
I carry for that super rare chance that I might actually need it and for countless utility needs that come up all the time.
Why would you automaticaly assume that just because this was a knife thread that everyone is a bunch of cowardly wimps?

I love knives.
Unfortunately Australia is getting so Nanny State that even having some are illegal because they're classed as Assisted or can open with 1 hand. (Which you can do with all so it's a load of crap)
Got a collection of ESEE. Couple of Izulas, 1 & 2, ESEE 4 and 6
Sypderco Sage 3 Titanium handle
Sypderco Native 4
Spyderco Gayle Bradley
Few others but they're just old average ones.
I had the Sage Titanium and Gayle Bradly stopped at customs when they came into Australia over some bullcrap but they finally released them after I fought tooth and nail for them. My bet is the bloke on the docks thought they were nice knives and was going to pinch them.

Man, that Gayle Bradley one actually looks pretty damn nice but way too much for a knife of that size. I also noticed that the Native comes in a variety of colors....did you get the pink one? I kid, I kid

Gayle Bradley is nice, pretty heavy. STRONG steel so it's really nice. Holds it's edge.
Generally my every day carry is the Sage 3 Titanium though. Beautiful knife. Razor sharp and light.
Got the http://www.edgeproinc.com/Profession...Pro-System-c2/
Edge Pro System to sharpen. Lots of grits. Moves up the range.
Not my image but this is the kind of finish you can get on it if you want.

Just a mirror finish, and so sharp it just pops the hairs off your arm.

That would be sweet but im not sure if I want to spend $350-450 on sharpening tools and then I have to learn how to use it lol. Im curious how much knife sharpening places around my part charge for a finish like that. I dont have enough knives to sharpen right now and even if I did, I will only be using 3 on a regular basis if that. But who knows, im sure if this turns out to be a big hobby, ill have one of those

I sharpen Knifes for other people as well.
So I do mine and Kitchen knifes around the place for mates. Bit of extra cash.
And how has this turned into a thread about fighting with knives? I use mine every day for a utility knife. Not self defense.

absolutely not. but ya know, i've had some sort of auto knife on me for the last 13 years and never an issue.
for the most part, no one would ever know unless i got searched and even then a cop may not really pay much attention to it. but mine isn't real obvious what kind it is just to look at it.
either way, i don't give a crap, i love switchblades, i use them exclusively for work and i or no one i know sees a problem with them. BladeHQ doesn't care where they ship them to, so long as you pay

I have a karambit,i have a wooden one for training and a real one which i got from my instructor back in 1996.
Its a Filipino/Malaysian/Indonesian weapon, not sure where it originates from but the filipinos use it as part of there Pagamut(empty hands training) and the movements replicate the blade, infact all of the filipino empty hands comes from using a knife, its basically and extension of the hand, just like the rattan sticks are normally replaced with swords once the student reaches a high level of skill which is all about attributes and higher and higher levels of timing.

I got fascinated with sharp edges as an auto machinist years ago. Now I have been "playing" with serveral brands of self-assisted openers from kershaw, s.o.g and benchmade. I found some fantastic 1x30" 6 micron belts made by 3M named TRI-Zact. these belts will gie an almost perfect mirror edge to most any knife. Used with a fine leather strop rubbed with a stick of jewelers rouge polishing compound. edges good enough to shave with are attainable this way with some patience. Don't practice on expensive knives, although the better the steel, the trickier it is to get a perfect edge. I got carried away and started collecting vintage straight razors, and even taught myself how to use them. YIKES!!!! make sure you have band-aids and a styptic pencil handy. a really sharp knife is not as sharp as a razor.

When I was a teen, I used to collect knives and I also used them at work instead of a box cutter. Box cutters were so friggin bulky...it was like trying to cut a box with a cucumber. Is that a box cutter in your pocket or - oh it's a cucumber.
After a while I would lose many of them, they fall out of my pocket in someones car, etc. So I stopped buying them for a few years. Now I only have one folding knife, the Smith & Wesson Cuttin' Horse and I love this thing. The best cheap knife ($10) out there that is light, durable, and doesn't wobble. The plastic feels like the same kind of polymer used in handguns.
