It depends on what you pay. I got my two 460s for less than a single 480, and they kill it. Cheaper and more power. Havn't had any heat issues, and I've been lucky so far to not have problems, minus 1-2 times sli turned itself off.

Love my 560TI cards in SLI and haven't had a single problem with SLI that I haven't also had with a single card. As far as buying 2 lesser cards instead of spending $500+ on the higher end card goes, I could not afford spending that much money all at once. I bought one for $230 and 2 months later a 2nd for $200. Still less then the cost of 1 580 card at the time with greater performance and fit into my budget better.

Shouldn't hate on SLI, people have their reasons, and seems most issues have been worked out. At least for my setup anyway. I'd have a hard time letting go of SLI for 1 card now that I have it.

Of course

570s are around 20% slower than 580s, so two 570s should easily beat out one 580 provided that SLI is working.

My two Gigabyte GTX 460 OC ed. 1GB in SLI are faster than one of my GTX 580 in 90% of my games.

Well tell that to 3Dfx... oh sorry you can't

I've used 3Dfx SLi and now nVidia's SLi since 2006 and have permanently been running SLi ever since and I never had any issues. I have had the same problems with single and multicard configurations.
What good is the fastest ram, cpu, motherboard if you still get bottlenecked by the GPU performance at 2560x1200 ?

Luckily there's a market for each individual needs

I asked because I was thinking of picking up a used pc with 2 msi 570 twin frozr iii cards and a i72600k unlocked for a very good price.
I have a 580 with an i7 920 oc'd at the moment and thought the 2600 would be a nice upgrade but not sure about the cards. Thanks to the response here I went ahead and bought the used pc.

560TI sli = AMD 7950 OC

but here is why AMD is better...

Price 400 bucks, yup, less than a good quality brand 560 TI in sli mode.
Power consumption
Heat
Noise
ONE GPU > ALWAYS better than multi GPU.
Microstuttering, some peoples said they don't "feel it" yeah, trust me it's still there

Only good reason to run 560 TI TODAY in SLI mode is when you already got one card.
You hate ati ;]

Otherwise ONE gpu is always a pure winner.

Thats 2 of my reasons. Another being that I won't spend over $300 on a single video card. I just don't feel like the performance gain on a card for over that is worth the extra $100 or $200+ price tag they put on the cards, even thou my 2 together cost me $430, I bought each 3 months apart from each other, I have 2 cards for my money; not just one, and at the time of buying 2nd one there was no single card option better still then what i paid for the 2. And have had zero issues.

I'm not saying thst one way is right or wrong, or better or worse, just that for me, it just works out better and I've never been happier.

My GTX570s score just over 11,000 in 3Dmark11 pushing a very minimal OC. So far I haven't seen a need to upgrade yet for 1920x1080. I don't know if I would want to try and push them for anything over 1920x1200 because of Vram limitations but in my case it's never been an issue.
