Smile Gigabyte HD 7950 will NOT accept the ATI 12.3 - 04-12-2012, 15:24 | posts: 4 | Location: Germany

Hello to all memebers,

I am running a gigabyte HD 7990. This card will only accept the AMD_Southern_Islands_8.95_RC_WinXP-Driver from the gigabyte-site.

Only recently in guru`s download I have found the (8.951.0 March 8) AMD Official WHQL-Driver which is also supposed to be useful for the
AMD Radeon HD 7000 series of products
Catalyst 12.3 now fully supports the AMD Radeon HD 7900, AMD Radeon HD 7800 and AMD Radeon HD 7700 series of products

No matter what..............my system will NOT accept this driver.
Who can help please?

Which OS are you trying to install the drivers to?
Without that info, you are helpless right now.

If it's XP, then, this should do it, http://forum.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=360690
At least the card is listed in the Desktop Cards Support list.

Edit:

Oh, sorry, you already tried those.
I can suggest you a clean install.
Use DriverSweeper to clean the old drivers, and try to install them again.
Other than that, I don't know, sorry.

Welcome to the forums, the 12.3's don't support the 7900's on XP as far as im aware, XP support for the 7's doesn't start until the 12.4's, which will be out sometime this month.

The release notes for 12.3 at least had somewhat strange information on the webpage. The direct release notes were more concise. It said that for 7900 series cards, XP support would be available in 12.4.

There was a 'beta' driver (newer than the "hacked 11.12" that supported XP, and that fixed the hard freeze/black screen CMD Prompt bug, but still had a LOT of game issues, including BSOD's when EDAA was enabled, or even when FSAA was enabled on some games, game not responding freezes in some other games, and the "Frozen PCIE x1 link speed" bug using VGA->DVI adapters or some old single link DVI screens (that was fixed in the later W7 driver builds).

I have not follow for XP driver compatibility, but i suggest a clean install too..

I have got a similar problem when installed 7970 CFX after running a 5870 CFX system without reinstalling windows ( 7 in my case ) ..

11.12 and 8.932 no problem.. but other driver was fail to install. ( i have tried clean with driver sweeper, manually delete GPU registry entry ). Just a fresh windows install have solve the problem.

No bsod or whatever similar, just the drivers installer was report "install fail" for the driver ( all other component, success )

To OP your Operating System is severely limiting your available memory. Time for a change I think.

Which memory do you mean? Xp 32bit allows only up to 3500 MB Ram. The card itself runs 3 MB memory!

I mean the 12.3 driver does install but in the hardwarelist is still the old date and version visible and no reboot is demanded.

I had tried to install the 12.3 driver via hardware manager, but then it does not identify the HD 7950 but offers some "Fire stream"-stuff in the list, so I finish up with that.

Yes. 4 gigs Ram are stuck in XP 32bit............so what?........I do know that`ll only recognize 3,6 Gigs.

Anyway...........thanks for all your answers!

I`ll wait for the 12.4

in addition to previous post:

I still have another option:

the left side of my desk stores another desktop-mate which is a win7 ultimate 64 bit with an Intel i7 975 3.33 Ghz plus 12288 MB RAM.

I am thinking of swapping the cards between those two.........

What do you think?

I just got another 7970 for crossfire. Been playin in windows xp but I found out the CCC is the only way to enable Crossfire...I knew it wasnt supported and is planned not to be supported so i was looking for a work around lol

I seem to have them both cards running and installed it reduced the amount of physical ram by 290 megabytes. But no crossfire.
I could recover that ram by disabling the second card.
so far its showing 2.96 gigs of ram when with just one card installed it showed 3.25

I thought i could force crossfire through the Crossfire Extension 1.4 application. BUT I found out that only enables crossfire in apps that dont support it when you already have officially enabled crossfire through CCC.

I played with the registry tweaks that are supposed to enable crossfire. but unfortune me the CCC with the 12.3 drivers dont support crossfire for 7970... Not that i expected it... to work. lol

anyways it would be interesting to see what would happen if someone modded the XP drivers to allow crossfire enabling in CCC... lol I'd test it.
