Question New Computer - 04-05-2012, 23:26 | posts: 110

Hi everyone,
im Going to build my first computer so I looked over the web and found some pretty good stuff. Id like you to tell me if there is a problem or if there is some better stuff. I also need help finding a good screen.
by the way im planning on gaming hard on this computer and close to competitive level (starcraft 2).

here is the build:
motherboard asus p9x79
gpu asus radeon HD7950-DC2T-3GD5
processor intel Core™ i7-3960X
8 Gb RAM 1600MHz (2x4Gb)
Hard drive seagate momentus Xt 500 Gb
optical drive Lg internal sata 12x
chassis thermal take level 10 GTS

Thanks in advance. I hope I made some good choice.

that's an awful case. other than that, not too bad. I would go with a cheaper (and in most cases also better) case and use the money to get at least a 64gb SSD for W7 and all the "program files".

If he's going to do that, he might as well get a regular 500GB harddrive instead of that Momentus XT (hybrid) drive. It's similar to Intel's "Rapid Storage Technology" in that it caches most frequently used files to an SSD storage space. The difference being that it contains both the mechanical drive and SSD in 1 unit....so, if 1 fails, you lose both.

@OP: My recommendation would be to use a different case and a 64GB SSD with standard 500GB mechanical harddrive for storage. That Hybrid drive just seems too much like a disaster looking for an opportunity/place to happen. Sure, the compartmentalization of components seems like a great idea....but after you've done a few upgrades the hassles of having to reorganize power cables in those type of cases really gets tiresome.

3960X for gaming? Eh. No game needs a hyperthreaded hexacore. Grab yourself a $220 i5-2500K, it'll get you pretty identical gaming performance for a fifth of the cost. What made you think a $1000 CPU would be a good idea in the first place?

2500K will go with an LGA1155 Z68 board, e.g. Asus P8Z68-V.

The graphics card is good. But what resolution do you play at? 2500K and that graphics card will need at least a 500W power supply.

The 2x4GB RAM is a good choice for LGA1155, but LGA2011 would want four RAM sticks as it uses a quad channel memory controller.

I'm not sure if Seagate Momentus XT is a good choice. Usually I recommend buying a system drive SSD along with a separate storage hard disk.

There are better case choices for that price, e.g. Corsair 400R or Fractal Design Arc Midi.

Also, where are you buying from?

For competitive gaming, buy a 120hz screen. E.g. Asus VG236HE, BenQ XL2420T.

Im going to play on 1920*1080 or 1920*1200. Do you think it would be better to get 2 GPU a bit cheaper. If i use a LGA1155 and an i5 i dont get the PCIe 3.0 port, do you think the hd7970 is still worth it?

Also, what about a i7-2600k a P8Z68-V/GEN3 and a HD7000 series?
Im really interested in using a PCIe 3.0 GPU.
is the i7-2600k worth it compare to the i5-2500k?
Id like to get some REALLY good stuff now so i dont have to change it too soon.

Sandybridge CPUs do not support PCI-E 3.0.
