For those who arent aware:

A welcome update of a 16-bit classic is on the horizon from Bohemia Interactive (of Arma fame) which is something to look forward to for those of a certain age. Actually anyone who liked Hostile Waters and the Battlezone games should be interested in this, it's certainly looking good and seems to be faithful to the original.

Played the original on Amiga500. Was never able to win / finish it, NOT even the enemy carrier!

Saw him 1 time only and damaged him pretty good but i think he got me too and then hurried away. Bastard.

I have fond memories of playing this (and Starglider) on the Atari ST, which I owned for 18 months prior to moving up to the far superior Amiga 500 which I did a swap for. Never regretted doing that I can tell you. PC's are undoubtedly superior these days for gaming but a big piece of my heart will always belong to the Amiga and Commodore 64, which both introduced me to the exciting world of videogames.

I did actually complete it but it was hard catching the enemy carrier as it could go super fast when it had to escape.

On the BI forums one of the original programmers posted - "we were so far behind the contract that the money had run out months ago, and we were totally burnt out. This is my excuse for the nasty habit the enemy carrier had of driving into the islands in the first ST release! New disks were sent to those who complained."

This really pee-ed me off as I never realised they improved it, I did catch the enemy carrier sitting on the island a couple of times, it would zip off quickly when you attacked it. I wonder if I should re-visit it and give it another go, apparently the pc version was superior to the Amiga and Atari versions as it came out a bit later and they re-worked some of the code.

The Atari ST was better for 3d games as it a faster 68000, but apart from that it wasnt, ie crap sound, no blitter and 32 vs 16 colours.

This is gonna be great on SP and MP...33 Islands all with different resources,2 Carriers armed to the teeth with Ground force and Air force vehicles,You are the Commander,Your Objective: Destroy the enemy Carrier by taking over Islands for resources using your ground attack Walrus Tanks and Air Attack Mantis Fighters, you can go manual in any of the vehicles or assign them to waypoints where they will try to get the job done automatically for you....The thing is the Enemy Commander of the other Carrier will be trying to do the same to you.

Cant wait.

You can get access to the PC beta on Friday, two Play & Contribute packages are available depending on how generous you feel. I've got mine and I'm sure it will not disappoint those of us who have been looking forward to this.

Umm are there instructions for this, I don't know what I'm doing!

Had to lower some settings to get an acceptable frame rate which eliminates the mouse lag but it looks promising.

There's a manual in the install directory, use that to learn the basics.
(The beta or demo or what to call it best is a bit bare currently so it kinda just plops you into a 1vs1 skirmish match, reading the manual will really help.)

I've yet to fully immerse myself in it, I wanted to finish off a Fall of the Samurai campaign today (I didn't manage to) or I'd lose the thread and it's hard to pick those up again.

I haven't played games all year really and I have got 3 to do now!

What I've seen of it, it has potential to be excellent. These types of games are my favourite, modern games as (EDIT: as I said last year!!) that come to mind like it are the Battlezone games and Hostile Waters (obviously) where you orchestrate battles and fight in them personally. They're kind of unique RTS games in a way and I'm surprised there's not more of them.

Interestingly in Fall of the Samurai they give you the option to manually fire artillery on ground and in ships, so that's kind of like in the spirit of things I'm on about.
