Recomendation on Wireless N router -

so i bought this D-link DIR-655 based on reviews on newegg and amazon both have over 1500 reviews.
So my problem is that no matter what i cannot get it to work at 300mbps it stuck @ 150mbps on my home network not internet. The second problem is that my xbox slim cannot properly work with 655 i've tried to stream HD not real HD but 720p MKV rips at about 3500 Kbps no lucky. The bar on xbox(windows media center) suggested me to watch SD quality. I've tried everything chnging wireless security, changing channels, broadcast only N.. nothing worked just hopeless it ate a year of my life in two days. So i packed it and returned it ( even though it broadcasted @ 150mbps i still was able to stream HD 720p mkv fiiles between my laptops and even tried 45.0 Mbps 1080p clips not so smooth thhough but xbox just hopeless)
Now i'm shopping for something better don't like d-link
any suggestions?

That's fine, wireless N on 2.4 GHz bands don't always allow 300 mbps ... it rarely does. You need to be on a 40 MHz wide 5 GHz band in order to achieve that 300 mbps that's actually promised. This is why manufacturers advertise UP TO.
As for your mkv, it should work, I find that WMM sometimes screws things up, maybe turn it off? What's the signal strength at your XBOX 360? It should say on your D-Link control panel.
Unfortunately, this router is not DD-WRT flashable, else I would have suggested you to do so.

Where's your access point located in relation to the XBOX 360 and from it to your laptop?
Also, is the access point against a wall? If so, move it from the wall because you're going to have weak signals behind the wall.

Ye, it's a crappy Ralink chipset wireless device. Personally I don't like USB wireless cards. They tend to suck.

I have the D-Link DIR-655 sitting right next to me....lol.
Mine has had no problems connecting at 300mbps, when a capable wireless nic is used. Most of the integrated wireless-n nics only support wireless-n 150 though, from what I've seen. I miss my D-Link....now I'm stuck with an Actiontek WI424WR2-Gen2 wireless b/g modem/router.
You could look at Linksys, but they're not cheap. Even Belkin routers are pretty decent, but unless you know for certain that your xbox and laptop have full support for wireless-n, you'll have the same issues.
If you're willing at all to give D-Link another shot, I'd recommend this: DIR-825 Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router

i kinda gave up my dream to use xbox as my media player. I watch mkvs with multiple language tracks and Windows media center does not have an option to change tracks or display subtitles. Laptop is much easier plus i'm hoping that in the next of couple month developers would come up gesture controls for windows 7 3rd party media players. Got my kinect on top of tv just waiting and hoping for those days.... well bowling is kinda fun to play sometimes

I don't think its a problem with your router. Check this out: Quoted From MS
Supported wireless standards
The Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter supports the following wireless standards:
Standard Connection speed Radio frequency band
802.11a or A: Original Xbox 360 console only Up to 54 Mbps 5 GHz
802.11b or B Up to 11 Mbps 2.4 GHz
802.11g or G Up to 54 Mbps 2.4 GHz
802.11n or N 7x faster than "G" 2.4 GHz
802.11n or N: Original Xbox 360 console only 7x faster than "G" 5 GHz
The built-in Wi-Fi on the Xbox 360 S console supports all of the wireless standards except for 802.11a, and the 2.4 GHz frequency band of 802.11n. If you connect an Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter to an Xbox 360 S console, the console will support all of the wireless standards listed in the table above.
Actual connection speed might vary.

Guess to fix that is to have a simultaneous dual band router which the OP doesn't have.
So I suggest either going with ASUS RT-N56U (cannot flash to DD-WRT), DIR-825, the Linksys E4200 or the Netgear WNDR3700v2.

agreed, more money spent now, less for the future.
I had to choose what i wanted to do when my faithful netgear of ALOT of years started giving me a little trouble, Gigabit or no Gigabit LAN,I plan on having a CAT6 network in the future, especially for a connection to my shop, so I shelled out the extra dough for it - Netgear WNDR3700, Zero Regrets although it ran me about 120 bucks (have a buddy with 10% Walmart discount). Even has the usb drive port (which I have heard is not so stellar, but still available).
Trust me, You would probably be happy with it.
