Default DVI to DVI cable Vs HDMI to DVI cable : Visual Differences ??? - 10-23-2010, 20:51 | posts: 220

Hey Guys,

I have some queries regarding the above mentioned cables .......... Currently I'm using a Zotac GTX 460 1 GB graphics card which has 2 Dual Link DVI, 1 HDMI and 1 Display Port Output...... It is connected to a Samsung B2230 LCD Monitor (which has 1 DVI and 1 Analog input) [1920x1080] using analog vga cable with a dvi to vga adaptor that came with the graphic card
........ I intend to buy a digital cable but i'm not sure whether to go for normal DVI to DVI cable or HDMI to DVI bi-directional cable ..... Actually i may be purchasing a HDTV later this year in which case the HDMI to DVI cable may come handy if i want to connect to it............ So i would like to know whether there is any signal loss/visual differences in converting HDMI signal to DVI and vice versa using the above mentioned cable.

No. Theres no converting. Its the same signal, just a different interface. But note, no audio over DVI.

Thanks for the reply guys ........ I'm not worried about the sound as i'll be streaming it through my X-FI sound card to the speakers ...... In that case i'll buy the HDMI to DVI cable............ Thanks again

DVI rocks if it's your only, or cheapest alternative stick with it, and for god's sake never ever spend $50 on a hdmi cable........ (unless it's 50' or longer)

I have 2 $6 hdmi ebay specials and they work perfect!

jskyg is correct. no point in spending more money on hdmi cables. hdmi transfers digital data. expensive cables dont make the 0s and 1s look any prettier.

Some screens handle HDMI badly though so bare that in mind. Mine for example has fuzzy text etc over hdmi as it image processes the picture for films, where as dvi is unprocessed and designed for the PC.

Do you have an input select to change it from TV to PC? My monitor does the same thing on the TV setting and it increases the brightness by about 50%.

i was curious of this as well and i have both cables so i tested it and the only difference i noticed was the picture was brighter using the hdmi cable. sharpness , colors , clarity was all the same, the hdmi was as i said just a bit brighter

Both should be the same in terms of image quality. They only difference is what processing the monitor or TV does to the signal because it detects it on a different input.

It's the same video signal going over the cables, that's how the passive DVI-HDMI adapters can work. It's basically just a change in physical dimensions.

lol, i spent $100 on a 4feet 1.4 hdmi monster cable i think its 15.something transfer rate. the store just lied to me when i bought my 3d stuff, informing me that an hdmi 1.4 cable was a requirement. ive done some testing at home and theres no difference in picture quality between the version 1.4 and the cheap radioshack 1.3 versions

Ahahahaha, gutted, my most expensive HDMI cable was £4 for a 2m (~7ft) one. You need 1.4 for 3D but you can pick them up for nothing aswell.

I recently bought a 25FT HDMI cable for $39.99 CDN with the idea of hooking my tower up to my 46" 1080P LCD TV. But my GTX460 has "mini" HDMI port. How do I get around this?
