Extremely low 3DMark06 points on 8600GT 512MB -
09-21-2010, 17:39
Hi guys i own an nv 8600gt from point of view, passively cooled, with 512mb of ddr2 memory.
When i bought it, it was scoring 6000 3dmarks in 06. After a year my PSU died (and another year the pc remained shut down, nobody touched it) and now i bought a new one, iMemory 500W PSU.
Now, my 3dmarks are...1870 in 06!!!
I really don't think it's the PSU, since 500w are more than enough. I was using the 258.96 drivers, changed them to the 260 beta and then to the old 186 (don't remember the exact versions). The clocks are 540/330 for the GPU and the MEM.
My system:
Win7 Porfessional 32bit, 1,5GB of Dual Channel Ram, Intel Pentium D 830 @ 3GHz, 160GB HDD, Gigabyte 8i945PL-G MoBo.
I really don't understand what is going on...everything seems fine...

Why reformat? Isn't it good enough to uninstall the old drivers and install new ones?!

If you dropped that much check and see if multiplier (sp) changed from stock.
I had built a new system with a Dual core chip and one day started getting major lag in
ArmA turns out some how my bios was messed up and the Multiplier had been dropped to 6 rather than 9.
Win 7 might want more ram, Is that the same OS as before shutdown?
Good luck and let us know what you find.

Ok thanks, how will I do that? Dump the bios using GPU-Z and modify it somehow then flash it again (i don't think so..)?
Also GPU-Z displays my bus width to be 64-bit!! I think that 8600GT's is 128bit....right?
My OS is Win7 Pro 32 bit and before i had XP Pro 32bit...

You're running Windows7 on a Pentium-D with an 8600GT and expect to get 6k in 3DMark06? Your system wasn't capable of it before. My Athlon64 X2 5600+ with 8600GT's in SLI could barely score 6k in 3DMark06. You seriously need to upgrade your system.

8600GT and 6000 3dmark '06? with a Pentium D?
No way. Maybe 2500 points would be reasonable with that setup. even a QX6600 with 8600 only scored 6500 but that high score is due to the massive dependency of '06 on the CPU, with your cpu it'll be way way lower.
Try running 3d mark '05 and see if that gives you 6000 points.

Lol. First of all, that score is impossible with that hardware. Second, why are you benchmarking a system like that anyway?

It's not even worth it to bench my system....and it's reasonably current considering how much of a tight-wad I am when it comes to buying components.

Even 8600GT in SLI would never score that much with your CPU in 3DMark06. Also, you can't run a 512MB stick + 1GB stick and be in dual channel. By being in single channel memory mode you're also hurting your performance.

Yes you can, even you have different module sizes. It's called Dual Channel Assymetric.
The normal type is Dual Channel.
And the third type is when you have different frequencies. It is called Dual Channel Interleaved.

This was my score with a SLI 8600GTS and a 3.0ghz E6850 back in 2007.
3DMark Score 8287
SM 2.0 Score 3695
SM 3.0 Score 3212
CPU Score 2700
There is no way a PentiumD + a single 8600Gt can score 6k ... !!
Your ~2k is about right for your setup.

Yes ok, maybe I remember wrong because I haven't used it in like 2 years. I'll test it again with 05.
But the point is still the same!!
1800 points is the average for an 8400GT!!!!! I really don't believe my cpu is pulling me me down so much...

First of all, rule number 1 about comparing benchmark scores such as 3DMark. NEVER change the default settings.
3DMark06 is set to 1280x1024 by default. Your 1024x768 score is entirely null for comparison.

^it defaulted to 1024 x 768 for obvious reason, my monitor doesnt support beyond 1024 x 768, thats why i tried to compensate to have 2X AA and AX AF at that time.
