Risen 2 was first announced as in development yesterday at GC'10. I've still not played the first but perhaps I now should.

What did you guys think of it?

edit

Risen 2 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 still has no release date set.

A sequel?

But the first one was bad...poor acting, poor graphics, poor gameplay, and just technically, the game was not built well. Oh well...

first one wasn't.. terrible. But I admit I found it a bit lacking.. In particular I found that I was getting confused about what tasks I had to do and often found me searching online for answers to get through lots of parts.
Yeah yeah I know, it would be easy to flame me out here and noobify me, but seriously, I've played dozens of RPG games and never got stuck so badly like I would in this game. I mean there really was a lack of detail in terms of the map and in terms of information available..
for instance, you would have to go and talk with some char in game, but they would not be shown on the map, nor would the character glow in game or be noticable in a way where you knew who to talk to or where to go. Pretty confusing.

Besides that the game played well but was pretty bland. Hopefully they can improve for the second.

Not harder, just poorly made. Sorry, but when it tells me I must find a person in a crowd of 50+ people, with no idea what to look for, and each Civvie has 50x over the same speech you CANNOT skip, something is wrong. Difficulty is fine, but that's tedious.

I liked the first one (I love the gothic series), but it has some flaws IMO:

-It's a hard game if you choose to be a caster
-The last chapter was average/bad
-The map (island) is small
-No replayability
-Some animations (jump) and characters were not that great

But overall the game was really good, with this sense of exploration/finding secret areas that you can only find in gothic games.

Try a frost/axe mage (or warrior of the order for the better armours), it's what I did, it was great, although it takes a while before the ice spell really becomes useful and the stronger enemies like ogres don't stay frozen for long, so you still have to learn how to fight in melee and try to balance things, looking for hero crowns and ogre roots is essential if you want to pull this off without being too weak in neither categories.
Also I guess you do need to learn to aim that ice spell as it is travelling slowly.

Plus it forces you to learn to fight without relying on a shield when dealing with animals, time those dodges, man, time those dodges.

Well, I guess it still makes you point true, haha.

Anyhow, yeah, the first 2/3 of the game was great, writing was above average and the quests were interesting, such as that bandit quest in the town that involves placing a cow's head on a merchant's bed or the investigation at the monastery, it's unfortunate they seemed to have lost focus sometime around chapter 3 and the game mostly turned into going through identical looking caverns/ruins.

I particularly liked that neither the bandits nor the order were good or bad, the order shutting everyone inside the town taking control of everything and kidnapping any wandering men to forcefully recruit them all the while being so self righteous they couldn't see anything wrong in their doings, corruption obviously being present, while the bandits claim they want to free the town and take back what is rightfully theirs for the greater good of the people yet run rackets and commit acts of thievery.

I second what NiukNiuk said, I played the game knowing that it was Gothic's spiritual succesor, a series that I loved. The game was not bad, but not great either, think it was meant for the Gothic fans since it followed the same gameplay/graphics/story patern. A sequel is welcome!

I've never played a Gothic game, but I liked Risen a lot. I was glued to it till I beat it, which is much more than I can say for a lot of games.

During the press conference at the gamescom 2010 in Cologne, Germany, Deep Silver confirmed officially that Piranha Bytes and Deep Silver are currently working on "Risen 2". Daniel Oberlerchner, brand manager of Deep Silver, also reported this in our forum.

While this is no big surprise for most people, it should discard any speculations and rumours about other projects (i.e. Gothic 5) currently developed by Piranha Bytes. The next game will definitely be a successor to Risen.

Like Niukniuk said. It's a good game, but could have been better. If Risen2 will be as gothic2 compared to gothic, it will be awesome.

Risen was brilliant and tbh I wouldnt compare it with Gothic too much as it felt much more polished to me and the combat felt much, much better than Gothic 3 for example.

Would definitly recommend giving Risen a go if your looking for an RPG to play, just bear in mind it is quite a bit shorter than the rest of the Gothic series or oblivion etc

Great news, I've never played any of the Gothic games but I actually loved Risen. Being kidnapped/trained in the monastery felt great, and the staff combat was pretty enjoyable.

Sequel is sounding good
