External HD, XBox, Partitions and NXE USB update question -
04-10-2010, 16:50
| posts: 2,371 | Location: Shropshire, UK
I have an external HD formatted to FAT32. NXE has just had an update to allow you to use external HD's or mem sticks to install games onto.
My thinking is this. I would like to partition the HD with 2 16 gig partitions to use to install games on (as you can have only 2 (16 gig) mem sticks.
Could I do this with the HD and the XBox recognize the partitions?
I just tried to partition the HD with a program called Active Partition Manager but and the XBox did not recognise the partitions. That means nothing as I dont know what Im doing when it comes to this! I dont know if I need one of them to be an active partion or if there was some other option I did not use.
Any ideas chaps?
Would be great to have to 16 gig partions for games and the remainder of the HD for music and films.
Thanks.
Sy.

As far as i know you can only have one 16gig partition on each storage medium via the USB port, to achieve two 16gig you would need two memory storage mediums....so it don't matter how big the HDD is, its one 16gig partition on each storage medium.

I tried 4GB flash drive and it worked. I don't know why Microsoft limited the amount of drive space to 16GB. I thought that it's to back up game files.

^Think about it, do they want to make money on memory? of course they do so allowing bigger than 16GB would stop people buying the overpriced XBox Hard Drives as standered hard drives are much cheaper.

I had HDD failure and RROD on my first XBOX 360 console a few years ago. I got another XBOX 360 console and 120 GB HDD but I lost the game data on the 20 GB HDD that failed. I tried to save game data to a XBOX 360 512MB memory unit but I need more memory. The NXE update now allows me to save game data to USB 16GB flash memory. Next time that I go to the store, I'll get some USB 16GB flash memory units.

^^^LOL...I wonder if this update allows those who were banned and had the HDD disabled to still use the USB update thing to store and play games on, or are MS disabling the entire storage ability of a banned 360.

Did you have any account signed in on the 360, i know that when moving saves from the HDD to a official memory card or vice versa you need to have the account signed into the 360 dashboard, but not necessarily signed into live.

Well i can move my save games from HDD to memory card without actually having to be signed into xblive, (which i cant do anyway as there is no Internet connection in the bedroom since my fantastically built 13 months old MS official wireless adaptor stopped working for no reason), although i have no idea just what features you banned 360 has had disabled.
Well i just did i check for you and without being signed into XBlive(As i have no connection) i can move games, saved games and profiles back and forth between the HDD and the memory card, and vise versa with no problems.

^^I own two at present, one with the 1 RROD that MS want £68 to fix that was only 14 months old when it went tits up, and one that's working, and those two are the 6th and 7th 360 i have had........4 refurbished and 3 bought brand new...that's 4 original 20gig 360 that they could not fix even after 4 attempts, bought the new 60gig and it RROD 1 months after purchase and the shop exchanged, that one died with 1 RROD after 14 months and as i said MS wanted to charge me money, and the present working 60gig...although that might be as i don't use it much at all now seeing as i cant connect to xblive as once again another quality product from MS went tits up just out of warranty.
So yeah i own a xbox. LOL
