Default Switch and router in same network - 11-16-2009, 10:14 | posts: 9,183 | Location: Finland

I currently have the following network configuration:

Billion BiPAC 7202GR2A ADSL2+ modem/router -> 1Gbit switch -> D-Link DIR-655.

The problem is that computers that are connected to switch and/or directly to modem can not access D-Link DIR-655 network. However, it is possible to, for example, map NAS drive connected to 1Gbit switch from D-Link DIR-655 network if you know the IP address.

Is it possible to make DIR-655 in same network with that 1Gbit switch?

Is the D-link DIR-655 a router?

If so, then you have two routers, and you shouldn't have two routers on the same subnet, one of them needs to be configured not to act as a router.

DIR-655 is a 1Gbit & wireless n router. Do you happen to know how to do that? I have pretty limited knowledge when it comes to routers but I assume that DHCP and routing related needs to be done.

You may need to take the dir-655 out of the network and connect a pc directly to it in order to configure it, maybe not, depends on the default ip of the other router.

Type 192.168.0.1 in IE's url bar. Type your username and password for the router (and the security numbers that should show up as well).
If you're comfortable changing the router's settings manually, do that. If not, run the setup wizard and make sure that it get's an ip dynamically, and IS NOT supplying IPs via dhcp. In most cases it's that simple. That router should now act only as a wired switch and a wireless access point.

I feel stupid... It was indeed simple. Just DHCP server off and moving a cable. Everything works fine now.

Why would you want to use the router as a switch?, are you trying to obtain separate IP's for each computer? That would be the only reason I could see.

It pretty simple, I can't physically plug everything in D-Link router so I need that switch (and I need D-Link to be wireless & wired switch).
