Question Which OS? - 02-07-2009, 23:42 | posts: 495 | Location: Manchester UK

Hi folks me again...

ive got an amd 3200+ with 1 gig of ram and an asus a8n sli deluxe motherboard currently homing a x800 gto ultimate in it...what i wanna know is what os to stick on it...

i would like something like server 2003 for the whole domain control user login's and storage on the server, i like the features of Windows Home Server (only got the 120 day trial though ) auto backup etc etc...but i also wanna be able to run the odd game on it and vlc player so i can stick it in my room and hook it up 2 my tv...

basically all the features of a server so the other 2 pc's in the house have to log in and i can restrict my daughters account and also have it hooked up2 the tv for watching movies and so my wife can play games such as sims castaway and wow and anything else that takes her fancy...i do have a spare vista home premium key off a broken laptop...

but i would need access to the hdd's that are going to end up in this machine...200gb 500gb and some 1tb's (when i get the £££ )

cheers in advance...

Can't think of anything easier than server 03. Some people might suggest some linux based stuff, but let's be honest, you're just looking for a storage solution for two computers, I see no need for anything more than 03. You could use any OS for this purpose, really, but wouldn't it be cool to have a file server?

What I would do is use three hard drives, the two you mentioned, and some old 40GB drive. Install the OS on the 40GB drive, use the other two (or whatever) for storage. When the trial is up, reinstall the OS, and you're back in business.

And there's a good chance the Vista Home Premium key you have wouldn't work if you just installed it on any computer.

Pillmonster - what is DGFG???

well im off to install crysis on my test setup on the server see if that works then install FC2 and if that works safe to say most games will install....might stick vista on wifey's pc and server 2003 on mine although i think an 8800gtx in a server is a slight over kill

Most of games work, some doesnt. Most of stuff works which I have tried with Server 2008. I remember friend had 2003 server... Not sure about that but I think Lego Star Wars was one which did not work. Dunno about other games with 2003.

Crysis and FC2 work fine with 2008 server. 8800gtx overkill ? I have two of those

I'm just gonna use XP Pro (32-bit) until Windows 7 comes out in Q3 of this year. I thought about getting Vista Ultimate, but it's just not worth it if Vista becomes obsolete after a year. Although Windows 7 is only a minor revision, I would rather have the newer technology, although I'll hold off buying it if there are problems with gaming with it.

I too agree with Pillmonster, Windows XP Pro should work for you, I don't recommend Vista for your setup, because you have only 1GB of ram, and for Vista to run smoothly you need at least 2GB.

Be careful with XP Pro x64, make sure all your hardware has drivers for it before, there is very limited support for drivers for XP x64.

I agree.
Sounds like the op is making all this a lot more complicated than it needs to be....

XP Pro 32 would be the simplest option for you....if you only have 64 though that will be better than trying to run Vista on your rig.
