Default help overclocking 9600gt w/ rivatuner - 03-08-2008, 19:13 | posts: 9

Well i just got my 9600 gt from newegg.com about a week ago.The one i bought was already "superclocked" from evga from 650 mhz to 700 mhz. I set it up, ran the css video test, and it worked great. I got bored and decided to try to overclock it. I looked up all the vids and everything, decided to go with rivatuner 2.07. I do everything the guides say. Even the guide by derek. But when i moved the core clock over, hit apply, then ran a 3dmark06, and there was absolutely no performance gain. I then went and and moved the core clock, shader clock, and memory clock to the max they go, hit apply, then ran the 3dmaek06 again, and there was absolutely no change in anything. the fps didnt change, there was no artifacting, or problems with the test. It just acted like nothing from rivatuner even registred.I dont understand whats wrong at all. Can someone help me?

If you read the Rivatuner release notes (I suggest you do that from now on, they always contain important stuff), you'll see that the 9600GT support is experimental because the programmer didn't have a sample to make tests with. However, he has announced that he managed to grab one for a couple of days so expect v2.08 in the near future. More info here.

O/c is unified for all chips and 100% functional for 9600GT. There are no (and cannot be) changes in this area in 2.08.

Nuthin special, just used the official drivers from nVidia (9600GT drivers) Loaded RivaTuner then OC it. Perhaps its card specific?

cant be, ive talked to ppl with the exact same card from the same place, he used 2.07 and oc'd 23%. I probably missed something really stupid, but ive read the entire guide multiple times, and i dont know what im missing. Im not sure what u mean by drivers, i downloaded something similiar to that from nvidia website and i used the cd that came with the card and nothing happened. its real silly, ill apply the overclocks and when i hit ok, to close the system tweaks window, the overclocks go back to thier default settings. Did ur card do that?

Keyword for search is: throttling.

There arent any up-to-date guides on turning off throttling. Most of them use older versions of rivatuner and i cant do the samething they're doing. I need someone to walk me through this cuz ive checked everything.

You CANNOT turn off protective technology, aimed to prevent you from burning the hardware by unstable or too agressive overclocking.

people with the exact same card as me, using rivatuner 2.07 ocing their cards? All i want to know is how to stop it when i amp up the core clock, hit apply, then close the "system tweaks" window, the core clock returns to its default settings.

There are NO exact same cards, overclocking limits of each sample are different. Each system stability is unique too. I'd recommend you to stay as far from overclocking as possible, sorry.

My 7600GT would throttle when it's temps were too high, I don't think it was ever possible to be turned off. I just slapped on one of those Zalman heatsinks and it never complained again.

I'll play around with RivaTuner soon, wanna see if I can get this Golden Sample a decent oc. I was gonna get the normal Gainward but this one had those pretty heatpipes, I couldn't resist.

Well I have my brand new 9600GT (zogis) too. Yeah, I know too late, I'm in Mexico

Mine is not default overclocked and it was "locked" to 650Mhz.
I just downloaded and installed this beta drivers: 196.34 (8.17.11.9634) and the OC locks are gone, also you can crank you fan speed but is unnecessary, the default 40% fan duty cycle is perfect. I get 64ºC at full load (burn-in software, in games about 60ºC) with no fan noise.

This Zogis just crashed at 820Mhz Core/~2000Mhz Shader/~780Mhz Memory, all the time with the temp at 62ºC, so for now I have my perfect OC to: 766Mhz Core/~1900Mhz Shader/~756Mhz Memory at 59ºC.

Here is a JPG screenie with CoD4: MWF2 @1600x1200 all cranked to the max and with a nice 55~65 framerate.
My main monitor is an IBMCRT 20" 1600x1200 and my second one is a 17" 1024x758, so I can see the clocks, etc in real time.

I'm using rivatuner and Speedfan.
