A friend of mine gave me her Dell Inspiron 6000, in hopes of me being able to fix it. Well she kinda understated the problem here.

I push the power button and it lights up the power light and the HD light. The HD light stays light for 5 seconds, flashes once and turns off.

Then the computer is on according to the power light, but it wont post anything on the screen or show any hard drive activity.

I've tried re-seating the RAM and running off AC power and both have had no change.

Does anyone have any ideas of what to try or where to send/take this thing to? Her warranty has ran out and she really needs what is on the hard drive.

I've never had a laptop that won't even post before, so I'm kind of a noob at this one.

Also if I reverse the order of the RAM in the slots vs the original config, the laptop will do the same as before except it flashes the caps lock ~10 times and then powers off on its own.

If you need the data off the drive, just buy a $3 adapter to put a laptop drive on a standard IDE cable or buy a $20 USB enclosure for the drive.

A no post could be anything..cpu, motherboard, power converter (may be integrated to the motherboard) or even the AC adapter.

If you had another cpu lying around, you could try that.

My only suggestion is to get the data, put the rest up on ebay (include the empty HD caddy) and buy a new one.
