Im am setting up a 5 computer network to share a dsl (pppoe) connection. I need to use the existing cat5 cables that are already in the walls. Of the 4 pairs on the cat5 cable, one pair is being used for separate phone #'s to ea. room. Now, I would like to use pins 1,2,3,6 for the ethernet patch to get data to the router, then the pair that the phones are on would have a separate jack from the ethernet patch (2 jacks/1 wall plate)for ea. computer/phone line. Will this work O.K.?, being that the 3 pairs I am using(1 pair for phone, 2 pairs for ethernet)are all in the same cat 5 cable ? I am concerned about "crosstalk", line interference, noise, etc.

Figured it out on my own, thanks anyway. Man, did I get an education yesterday. I have done alot of home networks before w/ patch cables, but this was a huge nightmare, using existing wiring in a house. But it worked! A 2 level house,5 comps, dsl sharing,3 separate phone #'s, a large eletrical panel, a JB12,a dsl modem, a linksys router,a netgear hub. What made it a happen was, i was able to borrow a "toner" from a friend so I could trace the wires to ea. room, then on the cat5 cable, 1 pair was for phone and went to one jack, and 2 pairs were for ethernet and went to another jack.

Ok you got it working.. cool. All i would say is that you dont need to worry about cross talk. Maybe thinking about the cat5 core thinkness and how much drive you need from the phone line. You may not get 4 phones or faxes off the one socket now. Thats all i can forsee.
