Unhappy Headache 6800 to quadro 4000 - 11-19-2005, 00:33 | posts: 19 | Location: Between 3DWorld and Hell

I've been one week reading thousands of post about 6800 to quadro 4000

My conclusion is that i should download any 6x.xx ot 7x.xx quadro driver, use nvstrap of rivatuner, and istall it and reboot (for softquadro without bios or hard mod)
I've read about antiprotections (anti-what?)
And now (with RT 15.6 or 15.7) we shouldn't crack the drivers

For other side. Maya users (like me) shouldn't wait most performance improvement than the specview show us.

If I ask about an step by step you will tell to me that I haven't read the threads

Should I supposse that the "idiot guide" was written by AlecRyben, but not about gf6800, it was written about geforces 5.xxx and geforce 4, and a little extension for 5600 and its "no quadro correspondence" Nv31. And we should apply this guide with 6800 and the news "full-of-surprises" drivers (6x.xx and).

Are lot of people who says that softmod work perfect. But have a performance below of 30 in specview, where start to be dubs about the real working of softmod

Some who have X performance with a gf6800 should get 2X performance with softquadro 4000 (In maya field of specview).

The good chipset is NV40, nor NV 41, nor NV42 nor 48 nor other one

The release of 4 extra pipelines of Gt/Ultra its done with the nvstrap of the RivaTuner

And now I'm going to take my computer and do SOmEthiNg!!.
I hope donīt burn neither the 6800 nor Pc nor my house

I read many times: I've done this, and this other and my result are this, but rare i cand know HOW have done this. Am I so stupid?... I supose it.

Have I written this trying demonstrate that I've read threads and can request a final guide of 6800 to quadro?

Is this post a desperated scream of a step by step guide or a link to a the instructions of "how to" these or that?

Perhaps, Posters of always, people who is tired of repeat always the same: Please, say or give the right links in one thread called 6800 to quadro FINAL or Ending-Story or something like that beacause a read a lot of information, agree and disagree information, lots of dates and nicks, and I only know that I'm gonna be CrAzY, in place of a quadro 4000 I'm gonna take a force-shirt and a 5x5 meters of quilted room.

In all cases. Thanks to Unwinder, AlecRyben, Farmer Brown, Snead, Fozzylyon, Snowball, Subtestube, Prisoner881, XeonXT, Loafer87gt, Rectifier, MikeMcNuke, BluefireXp, and all people who I'm leaving

Thanks for all, I know you are trying help to the lamers like me, not gonna us crazy.

(Donīt think us that, when your heads are to the edge of boom, the incredible beautyfull and wonderfull that would be this world withing computers... ...but we were stinged by the little worm of 3d!!!! ooooh man!!!, what disaster!!)

i hear ya man.. I have to agree the infomation is overwhelming to consume sometimes and that variations (even really minor ones) can throw people fully off track - as we dont know HOW it fully works and have limited comprehensions about over all how a graphics card works. Even though relative to the consumer market we think we do.
Its hard to research things sometimes when you dont know what your are researching.

I spent many many days researching my 9800 pro to a mod, and felt i got fairly clued up... and now come back here and its all gibberish again. There is a daisy chain of jargon, having to step through on thing requires you to read other threads to explain the meaning of something, that often refers to things youi are orginally trying to learn etc etc... its how foruming goes.

For the gurus i can understand this must drive you dilly some times and understand you on that level. I teach maya and feel the same trying to explain things to people and have your most simplistic efforts come out as jargon to them, on almost a pathetic level.

Ive only just started again looking into this forum for infomation and still will have to spend a lot of time learning. Im finding this very chanllenging as i dont have the card yet and 80% of things mentioned i cant SEE what people are taking about. Yet i dont want to go buy a card and relaise ohshhh.. wrong card - cant mod.

I personally would like to find information regarding what cards have a track record of being moddable.eg nVidia GeForce 6 Serie / Asus GeForce 6800 GT 256MB DDR3 (PCI-e), Asus Extreme N6800GT.

Its hard as half the time people seem uncertain about there mod, so i feel their "yay it works" can lack credibity. what? "yay" it says quadro...?? Yay it has boosted my maya performance 2x!?

Also trying to find info regarding the 6800GS...

Sorry gurus out there - This seems a forum to test the sanity of both you and people like us... al becuase of some pixels that we what to appeare twice as fast. personally dont like knowing my xyz card is exactly the same as 3Duber card - but having to sell my car because of some little electronic or software modifications. Its disgusting!

Thx for your understanding revilo.

Well:

1) Take RivaTuner 15.3, Specviewperf8.1, and one of this quadro drivers
RT’s NVStrap support:
7120,7090,7041,6702,6693,6681,6672,6670,6651,6632,
6631,6600,6591,6505,6177,6176,6171,6145 (I picked up 66.93)

2) Install Specviewperf8.1 and execute it, when you get the result save it for future comparation.
3) Install RivaTuner, start it, stop it, start it again
4) click at rigth of first "customize" that you can read
5) choose "low-level system settings"
6) go to "NVStrap driver" tab
7) click on "install"
8) In "Graphics adapter identification" we should choose "custom", NOT quadro
9) Activate "Use ROM straps for PCI DeviceID programming"
10) Choose 004E (NVIDIA QuadroFX 4000) in roll-menu below "Use ROM straps..."
11) Activate "Unlock professional capabilities"
12) Acept, Ok, and Reboot
13) Pick up the drivers and drag it with RigthMouseButton (RMB) to a folder in for example C/quadrodrivers, and select "Extract here" (Always you have installer Winrar in your computer)
14) Go to Win Device Manager with RMB over "My PC" in "Hardware Tab", choose Screen Adapter (firs option of the list), which should be "standard vga" or something like this. RMB and choose "update driver", choose two times the second option, browse, and go to C/quadrodrivers (if you have unzipped the quadro driver in this folder), and choose nv4_disp.inf", accept, appear a Quadro 4000 fx, choose it and finalize. If your pc request it, reboot.
15)In windows again, RMB on desktop for screen properties, Configuration tab, and "Advanced Options", if you're warned, accept, go to "trouble solve" tab (I work in spanish system, perhaps the traduction of the tab's name not is perfect), and drop in "Hardware acceleration" from none to complete. Accept, ok.
16)Now, again RMB on desktop, screen properties, Configuration tab, Advanced Options, and this time we go to QuadroFX4000 tab, choose "OpenGL Configuration", Turn to "off by default" the Vertical synchronization, and ins custiomized configuration pick up your favorite Cad program (In my case, Maya), Acept all and reboot.

17)Now benchmark again your system with Specviewperf8.1 and compare the results.

Hi guys!

I completely agree with you Reaversword. It is overwhelming all those “guides” that are post in many posts in this and other forums.

I actually bought a XFX Geforce 6800xt, 128 mb, AGP.
I did buy this card after doing my research on which ones are the good to buy to modify on to Quadro. It uses the NV40 chip.

I did follow all the “standard” processes to mod my geforce to quadro and “theorically” it is working fine, but my results are far to be on the average of other successful mods.

My computer:

Windows XP SP2 (genuine)

2x Athlon MP 2800+
2GB RAM (4 modules, corsair)
MSI K7D Master- L (motherboard, AGP 4x) AMD 768 PCI bus master
Enermax 460W
XFX Geforce 6800 xt, 128 mb
Audigy 2 ZS, Logitech Z-2300 THX
Western Digital 36GB 10.000 rpm. (win xp and main installation unit)
Segate 200 GB S-ATA
Promise SATA 150 TX
Maxtor 200 GB
Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2045u (I use this configuration 1280x1024)

Here are the results.

Before moding to quadro.

XFX Geforce 6800xt, 128 mb (200 euros)
Drivers 78.01 (80s series do not work in my card, does anyone knows why?)

Test: SpecView 8.1

---------- SUM_RESULTS\3DSMAX\SUMMARY.TXT
3dsmax-03 Weighted Geometric Mean = 9.931

---------- SUM_RESULTS\CATIA\SUMMARY.TXT
catia-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 6.764

---------- SUM_RESULTS\ENSIGHT\SUMMARY.TXT
ensight-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 7.391

---------- SUM_RESULTS\LIGHT\SUMMARY.TXT
light-07 Weighted Geometric Mean = 7.577

---------- SUM_RESULTS\MAYA\SUMMARY.TXT
maya-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 12.10

---------- SUM_RESULTS\PROE\SUMMARY.TXT
proe-03 Weighted Geometric Mean = 8.125

---------- SUM_RESULTS\SW\SUMMARY.TXT
sw-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 7.362

---------- SUM_RESULTS\UGS\SUMMARY.TXT
ugs-04 Weighted Geometric Mean = 3.574

Amazingly low results!! My god.
My previous graphic card was a official mod Quadro DCC and actually did better I believe.

Results with Quadro fx4000 softmod.
Drivers: 71.84
Vsync: off
Professional capaibilities activated in Riva tuner 15.7.
Computer detects Quadro fx4000, and running stable. But…..

---------- SUM_RESULTS\3DSMAX\SUMMARY.TXT
3dsmax-03 Weighted Geometric Mean = 11.74

---------- SUM_RESULTS\CATIA\SUMMARY.TXT
catia-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 10.90

---------- SUM_RESULTS\ENSIGHT\SUMMARY.TXT
ensight-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 9.972

---------- SUM_RESULTS\LIGHT\SUMMARY.TXT
light-07 Weighted Geometric Mean = 10.08

---------- SUM_RESULTS\MAYA\SUMMARY.TXT
maya-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 17.45

---------- SUM_RESULTS\PROE\SUMMARY.TXT

---------- SUM_RESULTS\SW\SUMMARY.TXT
sw-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 13.28

---------- SUM_RESULTS\UGS\SUMMARY.TXT
ugs-04 Weighted Geometric Mean = 24.65

Better than before but actually not even half of what people is getting in similar cards, even though what I’ve noticed is people are using 6800GT 256mb, and that might be the difference. Anyone can tell that?

With all my research on each one of quadro modifications forums I did never see those results. Is that this 6800xt does not really work as Quadro fx4000?

I would ask if is there no inconvenience that anyone that knows exactly what to do from step 0 (and I mean which drivers to install before moding to quadro for instance..) do we have to follow.
There is a super clear website by one of our members that has a website on how to hard modify to quadro fx4000. It is great.

http://www.newbietech.net/eng/qtoq/index.php

But I am just asking if someone with knowledge and just a bit of patience would explain exactly how to it. Exactly which drivers to download. Where to download them and more specially how to certify that our Quadro mod succeeded. Those "stupid" steps that still give me some uncertainty in my process.

There are many people having trouble and I really think is not that difficult, it is just a bit confusing sometimes and I believe we could speed up the process by some expert posting a definitive message on how to do it.

And another question I have is that do you think it is worth it to buy a geforce 6800 GT, 256mb and Hard mod to quadro? ( I might have the chance to do it with an electrical engineer). Will I get better and reliable results then? Or I will get the same results as tuning it up with rivatuner.

I can imagine how boring is to explain again and again the same story, and so I believe we all can save repetitive questions and requests.
Thanks guys for your attention, and I will really appreciate all your comments so we can learn from you. (specially the masters).

Thanks again to Unwinder which developed a great tool to help us all. Thanks man.

Hey!. Your results are REALLY for down of the logical media!. It's ok that you have 128mb, but...

In other side, xt is lowest version of Geforce... .... but...

And you have increment. I donīt know what tell you...

Have you well configured your Motherboard Bios (AGP size) or something like that?

Try with other drivers like 66.93 for example, perhaps you can up your performance...

You can find Rivatuners here http://ddl2.com/search.php
(put in searcher "rivatuner").

Drivers can be out from http://forums.anandtech.com/messagev...&enterthread=y

I did softquadro (Use for first time RivaTuner) with drivers of normal gforce. When card was recognized like "quadro", reboot, and one time in desktop, I uninstall "normal" drivers, reboot again, I did a folder in C: named "quadrodrivers", Unzipped quadro 66.93 drivers (if you have installed Winrar, with drag & drop with right mouse button you should be capable of unzipped it), and then, I went to the Device manager, update driver of graphic card, two times 2šnd option, and pick up you "by hand" nv4_disp.inf. Choose quadro 4000 (only will appear this option), and finalize. Reboot. You should have a quadro 4000, enter in advanced options of screen properties and turn off Vertical sync.

Later i unzipped drivers 71.84 in a folder in C: called "quadrodrivers71.84" and did the same operation with better result.

I tryed with 77.56 (lastest maya WHQL cerfitied drivers), but neither quadro 4000 tab, nor proffessional capabilities appear me, so at the end I installed 71.84.

For last. NOT you have some antivirus or some other software that is EaTiNg processor?

I do mys test with a resolution of 1152x864 and 32bits, BUT specviewprf don't full (itself) the screen, (I supose that work at 1024x768)

I don't know what more tell to you, I hope something of that help you....

A Greeting

Also people using Maya on a 6800 modded quadro should try the new 81.89 forceware. It have me (6800 ultra to quadro) a nice little jump in viewport perfromance and while it isnt certified, it doesn't seem to have any problems.

I've triyed with this drivers (downloaded from guru), but I canīt enable again OpenGL settings.
How you can?
RivaTuner says that haven't support yet for this drivers. Have you used NVstrap antiprotection or something like that?

I want say one more thing. I've been testing with some frecuencies of core and memory and I've seen a little performance booster (in Maya and in Specviewprf from 42.12 to 43.03) with the frecuencies of the original quadro 4000 (325Mhz core and 700Mhz memories).

Somebody happen the same?

You can do over (or under for GT and Ultra) cloking doing this:
Go to regedit>HKEY_ Local_Machine>Software>NvidiaCorporation>Global>NT weak
is this folder right clik on right side of screen (where is the list of files of this folder)>New>Dword.
Now open it (Double click) and in valor (0), you should PUT 3.
close it, and close regedit

Open screen propierties, advanced options, go to quadro 4000 tab, and in the list, you should have a new option where you can touch the frecuencies of your card. (6800 should have 325core and 700memory, GT350c&1000f, and Ultra 400c&1100m). If you have and GT or Ultra, try to underclocker your card to 325c&700m and do specviewprf.
Please, if you see a little performance boost, post it here.

CAUTION, you can burn your card if OVERclocked it more than 10-15 percent "GaMeRs", for overclock your card "good done" you should buy a NeW ENORMOUS cooler for your card, perhaps Leadtek buyers can take adventaje of his/her half kilo dissipator, Caution with our new pandora's box OK?

Hi guys,

I have to say that I was able to refund my money for my geforce 6800xt.
I think it was a better option to get the money back and spend just a bit more of money to buy the GT version.

I will get it this friday and I will test my results.

The one I bought is PNY Geforce 6800 GT, 256 mb, AGP

Two questions:
-Does anybody know whether AGPx4 makes a real difference in comparison with AGPx8 ? my computer has AGPx4,

-Does it make any difference to softmode or hardmode? Is it more reliable, stable, or problem free to hardmod? (i have an electrical engineer who could do it...). Please tell me if it is worth it.

thnaks and keep you informed.

My computer:

Windows XP SP2 (genuine), all updates.

AGP 4x shouldn't make much of a difference.

Just use the softmod, the hardmod isn't worth it has no increase in proformance.

Hi Aleix, I believe that the difference from 8x to 4x is at 15% of performance.
You can do three mods: Hardmod, Biosmod and Softmod

Harmod:
Pros: You ALWAYS will have a quadro, wich all operative systems, in all conditions,
Contras: You are putting in danger your card, you'll never got again the same performance in games than with gf6800gt

Biosmod:
Pros: The same that hardmod
Contras: You are putting in danger your card, you can do a security copy of your 6800bios, but the integrity of your card will be in hands of a fu**ing diskette, if power down during operation, goodbye to the card (if you have a Sai, better)

Softmod:
Pros: You get the same performance that quadro, and NOT are putting in danger your card. You can get two operative systems, one for work (with softmod), and one for play (withing softmod), so you will have two cards in one, and you will use the two when you want.
Contras: If you change, or format your Operative System, you need repeat softmod.

I recommend to you Softmod (and I use it).

A Greeting Aleix.

Ok, what is with the lack of "good" english on this post? Is everyone who works with Maya / 3Dmax Peruvian or something?

Anyway, I'm going to order (atleast I want to order) a 6800gt PCIe and softmod it to do the Quadro 4000 features. Now, my questions are as follows:

What 6800GT should I get if I want to softmod the card (any specific revision?)?
Is there any disadvantage to softmodding vs hardmodding the card?
Does softmodding work with SLI?

Now I'm returning a 7800GTX because the second DVI port is bad (its red, tested everything its the card...) we haven't come up with any Quadro tweaks for this i'm guessing right?

Why don't you guys buy some decent quadro @ ebay if you can't succeed ?
I bough one for one of my computers (quadro 3000 for 400$).
I've been softmodding my cards for a long time and I always got great results from ti4200, 4600, fx5800 to 5900xt and I can tell you my 5900xt does a better job on 3dsmax then the quadro I bought cause I can even use maxtreme drivers from nvidia on it and I did comparisons.
It's been a long time I didn't come here using the search engine, you'll be able to look at results obtained with RT on softmodded gaming card !
One thing, always read the help file on RT and look at the cards listed in before doing anything.

Wish you success !

Whilst I don't use professional 3D rendering apps, I was curious to see if the Quadro OpenGL driver would solve the v8x.xx GeForce OpenGL dual-core problem with certain apps (they hang or freeze for several minutes when started), and it was successful. At least PaintShop Pro 9 started up normally with the v81.67 Quadro drivers after doing the mod, whereas previously the v81.95 GeForce drivers (as with all previously tested v8x.xx drivers) caused PaintShop Pro to hang.

In RivaTuner (2.0RC15.8), under NVStrap driver I selected 'Quadro' as the Graphics adapter identification, and ticked Use ROM straps, and also ticked Unlock professional capabilities. When installing the v81.67 driver I forced it to choose 'Quadro FX 3400/4400' despite it wanting to select 'GeForce 6800 Series GPU' (I have a PCIe 6800GT).

To confirm that the drivers had installed properly and I was getting the full Quadro extras I ran SPECviewperf 8.1 before and after (it was evident something had changed as soon as I checked the settings as the options available in the driver control panel under 'Performance & Quality settings' was much different. Both sets of tests were with VSync disabled, and at 6800GT stock-speeds of 350/1000.

Guys, there are two ways you can go, first and foremost what you need is a card with a NV40 chip on the board, doesnīt matter if it is PCI-E or AGP. How to find out before you buy a card? You canīt cause it is difficult to find out because you canīt have a look at the card or the chip before you buy it. If you have it installed you can find out with Rivatuner, afaik everything above nv40 canīt be modded due to hardcoded registers on the GPU. Anyway, if you go for a card with AGP interface you will be able to fully mod the card into a Quadro (only nv40), which means you will be able to change the PCI_Device_ID to quadro, this wonīt work on PCI-E cards because there is a bridge chip on it which nails the PCI_Device_ID for nv40 PCI-E cards. But you will be able to unlock pro capabilities for the card. The difference is only that your card will not be identified as a quadro under windows, but you will have opengl panel for professional applications in the advanced driver properties. With an AGP-card you will be able to change the PCI_Device_ID and windows will detect your card as a Quadro FX 4000 if you use a 6800 LE/GT/Ultra, canīt speak for the newer cards. And you will get advanced opengl properties too. The only application I know is the maxtreme driver for 3dsmax which checks for correct PCI_Device_ID on installation.

regards

Not true, it does not seem to check for the correct PCI_DEVICE_ID, but only that your card is recognised by Windows as a Quadro. I installed 3D Studio Max 7 earlier, then installed the latest version (v7.00.03) of Maxtreme without any problems on my soft-modded PCIe 6800GT. The screenshot below is of the Maxtreme configuration options from within 3dsmax7.

My 6800GT is listed in Windows Device Manager as 'NVIDIA Quadro FX 3400/4400'. In order for it to come up as that rather than 'GeForce 6800 Series GPU' which the Forceware driver wanted to install it as, even after using RivaTuner to change the ID and unlock Professional capabilities, it was necessary to do a manual driver install, and not just the standard manual install.

After selecting 'Update driver', choose 'No, not this time' for using Windows Update, then 'Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)', then and these are the important steps, choose 'Don't search I will choose the driver to install', select 'Have Disk...', browse to wherever on your HD you extracted the driver to, untick 'Show compatible hardware', then choose the particular model of Quadro card you want the driver to install it as. That forces it to override the default choice of what the card appears to be and install the driver for the equivalent Quadro model you choose.

As you can see, it certainly allowed Maxtreme to install and work correctly

Hey has any one tried this softmod on solidworks? Although my performance has gone up, i still don't get the 'real view' option. i am currently using the 66.93 driver, so i guess i'll try some other ones, just wondering. Also, i'm wondering if i can flash my 6800gt pcie with an fx3400/4400 BIOS??? And if so, how?? =)

Wow, once i get comfortable with all this softquadro stuff, i think im going to build a system with a hard modded 6800gt/ultra --> Fx4000. =) =) !!!

If you guys have any suggestions on an AGP workstation/server board let me know. Or, a whole entire system build. I was thinking of the MSI nf4 dual 940 FAR board =) =)

Hi there okayturtle.

I am also solidworks user, and posted before my succesfull mod.
I can neither see any improvement in "real view" option in solid works, even though it is possible to activate. It is really strange. I cannot find out anywhere how to set up a good configuration for real view, and I would guess that it should be easy to use it.

Please if someone has any trick on that option post it here.

By the way, I brought back my card few weeks ago and now Iam waiting for a brand new Leadteck GT version. I guess will be much faster.

Unfortumately, just about all new mother boards require Pci-e so the 4200, 4600, and 5900 are out of the question. I know Nvidia made a PCX 5900 but I can not find one anywhere, even ebay

Some 6800GT are NV40, but what about the 6600 series. Are any 6600 GT, etc ... NV40 and softmodable ?? ...this way I can save $100

Excuse me, but I have a problem that I can't solve. I have a Dell 6800GTO, that is a graphic card with a (flashed?) FX3400 Gpu (i'm sure, i removed the heatsik). I try to flash this card with several fx3400 bioses (dell and hp) but the card is recognised ever as 6800: device id F09 instead of F08. I use Rivatuner also, but I couldn't unlock the professional feature, but (with Rivatuner) I activated all the pipeline. Any ideas? Please let me know if I have a chance to get this card into quadro. Thanks

ps there is a chance to modify into quadro my leadtek pcx5900?

Hi PrinceGaz
I am trying to get better performance out of my 6800GT that I run on a motherboard with a dual core pentium and I just installed the quadro 81.67 drivers

I don't get much of an improvement though.
When installing the quadro drivers I don't get to choose which card.
You say:
>When installing the v81.67 driver I forced it to choose >'Quadro FX 3400/4400' despite it wanting to select >'GeForce 6800 Series GPU'

However when I install the drivers I don't get much of a choice about which card to use. At which point during installation did you make that selection ? I was never prompted to select anything during install of the quadro drivers. It just ran through

thanks
Flavia

Okay, after studying many threads on the forum including this I came to the conclusion that 6800GT would be possible to convert to Quadro 4000 even on PCI-E. And YES!
Using the new Rivatuner 15.8 and nVstrap i can install the Quadro 4000 drivers :-D
So this confirms a successful attempt on Point of View GeForce 6800GT 256 Mb DDR3 RAM
