Default How to enable rsh, rexec, rcp access from Windows on Linux? (SUSE) - 10-26-2005, 12:29 | posts: 7,781 | Location: Utopia Planitia, Mars

In a super secure (totally isolated and totally disconnected from the internet) environment, i need to access Linux machines using the Windows versions of rsh, rexec and rcp utilities (rsh.exe, rexec.exe and rcp.exe)
What exactly do i have to do on the Linux side to enable that?
I have already put the IP of the Windows machine in $HOME/.rhosts on the Linux side and i have the same username and password combinations on both.
What's next? What services & ports should i enable in order to get rsh, rexec and rcp to work?

What are you doing?

I just use "Putty" to access my servers via SSH.

It's secure, program is small and standalone, tis a great App.

The windows machines are invoking a small shell script via rsh (rsh machinename /bin/bash dump.sh) that takes snapshots of the screen using the local name/time/date of the linux machine and then moving the file onto the windows machine using rcp. Then, the windows machine processes the xwd files into .GIFs and sorts them into folders.
I am doing that since the only two things i am allowed to execute on the linux machine are xwd and rm every five seconds, nothing else (it's a time critical radar monitoring application).

No idea mate.

I've only ever used "Rsync" over "SSH" between the Windows Server and Linux server running "Cgywin" on the windows machine to run "Rsync"

It's a way to copy files over a secure connection. Just google for Rsync on Windows via SSH or something.
