Is there a way to preserve your contacts when you reformat. What I don't want to do is re ask everyone if I can put them on my list.

There's no 'right' way that I know of <IMG SRC="smileys/frown.gif"> . But here's what I do.....save the entire ICQ directory on several floppy disks....or zip drive...or even a secondary HD... Then just reinstall ICQ and then copy the old files over theones just installed....It works for me... <IMG SRC="smileys/biggrin.gif">

There is an easier way, just save the 200 a or b directory. copy it over the freshly installed icq, run dbase converter or whateve it is with icq off of course. And presto. It should fit on a floppy unless got have some sort of monster icq setup.

I found how to do it, and shared with people who couldn't wouldn't tell me how to do it. Now you know the proper way to back up ICQ. I can tell you it worked fine for me.

there is an easier way. this is on the ICQ 99a version so i dont know how much different it will be from ver to ver. <br>
<br>
Click the ICQ button on the bottom left of your ICQ window.<br>
Select 'Message Archive'<br>
The last choice on your tree should show 'Address Book'<br>
Rightclick Address Book and select Export.<br>
Copy exported file to floppy.<br>
Reinstall ICQ to new HDD, do the same and Import from floppy.<br>
<br>
I havent had the pleasure of doing this myself so i cant say whether it actually works that simply or not but i cant imagine that *not* being the way to do it. Lemmie know if that works for you tho before i go reformatting myself <IMG SRC="smileys/sticktongue.gif"> <br>

Simple:<br>
Just copy your icq200b folder to disk. then when you reload icq just copy and paste it over the new one and hey presto, back to where you are. It does work I do it all the time.<br>
Note: Remember if you are saving the file to an external media, you may need to change the file properties when you bring it back on the 3 or so files inside that folder, just right click them and ensure archive is the only box checked.<br>

PS I found a great patch for ICQ 2000b build 3281 which disables the adverts on the bottom of your message box. If u r interested mail me or leave your email below
