Default 3Dmark05 & WinXP x64 Bit .. Very Nice!!! - 10-10-2004, 04:35 | posts: 173 | Location: Mob., AL (USA)

I just installed the new build of WinXP x64 Bit on my Athlon64 3400+ / 5900xt system...

I ran 3Dmark05 and was very impressed with the performance and quality, especially the quality on the cpu tests! This build on WinXP x64 truely r0x0rz!

On 3Dmark05 and WinXP x64 my scores were:

5900XT - 1398 (compared to 1213)
Athlon64 - 4367 (compared to 4208)

Truely awsome looks and performance...

seems odd since win 64 has to emulate 32 bit code which emulation usually results in slightly poorer performance

The 64-bit version of windows doesn't emulate it. It can do both 32 and 64-bit natively for the moment. It's very strange the way they have made it so far. It won't be able to do 32-bit at all, except maybe emulation, when the actual 64-bit version of Windows comes out.

And here is where the confusion starts. When I read the Win64 info at Microsoft, it talks about the WOW emulation feature for 32-bit apps. But it also only mentions the Intel Itanium 64-bit cpu. This cpu is not capable of running native 32-bit software. However, the beauty of the AMD 64 is that it can run both native 32-bit and 64-bit. I'm not sure how that is going to pan out, but you would think Microsoft is going to be able to support that functionality in AMD 64's.

Maybe, I got no clue what they are really going to do. I guess we'll just have to wait and find out.

Well.. from what I've understood it will always handle 32 Bit and 64 Bit natively.. I know 16 bit is out the door on WinXP x64, but doing that on 32 Bit would be crazy.. in best thing is compatiblity and that's what WinXP x64 is supposed to offer with it's x64 Bit engine. Also.. it has "always" been said that even tho WinXP x64 is 64 bit, it will still offer greater performance with 32 Bit apps, which it does in my opinion.

It's basically the same with WinXP 32 Bit.. when you run your graphics in 16 Bit you get better performance over the 32 Bit mode.. it's the same transition when going to XP x64.

As for the WoW feature.. I see it install during the Windows XP x64 setup and see the WoW folders/files in the Windows folder, I don't know if it's playing a role at the moment tho.

On 3Dmark03 I don't really see a big performance increase, a little, but no more than 3 or 4%, but to me it looks like the graphics are crisper and run smoother. Bottum line tho.. is XP x64 increase my performance and quality nicely.. all my 32 Bit apps run much faster, especially things like adobe acrobat reader, photoshop, etc.. I love XP x64.

My 3D Mark o5 score is way higher then yours, mine is 2703,and i found nothing wonderful or impressive about how it ran,it wasnt smooth or wonderful looking at all.The 5900xt guy,hes fooling himself,on drugs,or has food poisoning. His score is way too low to impress even a gamer who has been stuck using a Voodoo 2 for the last 6 years.
