Anyway, just compared Waterfox 18.0.1 and PM x64 15.4 using Google Octane, and Waterfox won by having 6300-ish points against PM x64's 5500-ish.
(of course Chrome still leads by having over 10k points but hey...)

 

dont chrome preload webpages before they are even clicked by default? something not really defualt on other browsers. imo that only reason why chrome is faster in benchs. In actual usage its the same atlest to me.

 

Most, if not all, browser benchmarks don't test for page loading, but rather page rendering.
That is, they don't take into account how much time did it take for a browser to load (as in getting the data for) the page, but how fast it can render or process the loaded data.

As such, as most benchmarks are mainly a JavaScript engine benchmark, the tests didn't take how fast a browser (down)load the .js file into account, but rather how fast a browser can process (run, compile; whichever terminology suits you) the (down)loaded .js file.
So, yeah, Chrome's prefetching doesn't really matter much on tests.

 

dont know i see no diffrence speed wise or rendering wise on chrome or Firefox

 

Because there's probably almost no websites are heavily using JavaScript (for complex computations) aside from those benchmarks, even Facebook.
In fact, what matters most is actually the correctness of the rendering, as in whether certain elements like text boxes and images are placed correctly, rather than how fast.
With the currently available processing power these days, you can hardly tell the difference of how fast a page is being rendered between browsers.
People usually compare the browsers' overall responsiveness and resource usage, and that's it really.

Kinda like those system synthetic benchmarks; Vantage, for example.
Doesn't really hold much water in real-world usage, but it's useful to gauge a system's discrete performance.

 

Thanks for telling me about Palemoon. Like it. Feels noticeably faster. I don't like how the plug-in tab keeps checking for updates every time I run the program. How do I stop that?

 

If by 'plug-in' you meant 'add-on', you can click the little gear icon on the top right-ish on the add-on/plug-in tab.
There's an option named 'Reset All Add-ons to Update Manually' you can try.

Did you start a fresh profile or using an existing one from Waterfox/Firefox?
If you're trying to use an existing one, it's better to use the profile migration tool rather than copying the profile straight to PM's profiles directory.

You can also try looking around in about:config and set plugins.update.notifyUser to false.

Last resort would be using this add-on to scrub the places database.

Open add-ons manager and untick automatic updates as shown in my screenshot.

 

It was a fresh profile. Will try the suggestions above. Don't really want all plug-ins to go manual but will have a look!

 

Apparently it's been happening ever since as far as FF 3.6.x to this day, and sporadically, so it seems there's no definite answer to that problem.
I only knew about the problem when you posted it above, and so far that's about as much as I can currently scrape from various forums.

I also have never had the issue, and I've used many, many, versions of FF and its variants, until your post which prompted me to search around.

Pale Moon has been updated to 15.4.1.
Changes in this version:
