Except...you know...for the fact that...they'll make more money this way? Perfectly understandable to release a lower-cost card for more money when your competition allows it, though i would rather this be a mid-range card and have the high end card released, it makes perfect sense why they wouldn't. AMD/ATI really screwed this one up
I'd say that AMD played it perfectly from a business stand point. They can now drop their prices, I'm sure they've made a good profit for the time they've been at the top of the tree. But now they can drop their prices to what we all really feel they should have been in the first place, and still compete well with the 680.
I wouldn't think they'd have to or really could, afterall they have to pay for the R&D of the new generation, but that's just my personal opinion. People will always pay a premium for the highest performing card, even if it's marginal. Until yields go up I don't see Nvidia needing to sell the cards at a price where demand outstrips supply.
The HD 7970 might not be the fastest single GPU card anymore but it has 50% more memory than the GTX 680. I'm kind of puzzled why people are saying that it has to be cheaper than the GTX 680 to remain competitive. Why? With that amount of memory, it is probably a better buy for multi-monitor gaming. That extra cost is justified by the extra RAM IMO.
To a certain extent but the sheer grunt from the 680 is awesome that TDP is staggering. What will the 680 4GB version add to the mix on pricing I wonder?
I wouldn't say the 7970 necessarily has to be cheaper, but the same price would make things interesting. In the UK they both cost the same, but elsewhere the 7970 is more expensive - in the US it's around $50 which could be a deciding factor for prospective buyers.
And yields aren't even a problem. In good ol' Charlie's 20% Fermi-yields worst case scenario nVidia would have to pay about $125 per working chip on a $5k 40nm wafer. Now it's probably $30 for a mini-GK104 or even less, unless TSMC's 28nm wafer prices have spiked over 50% without anyone telling us.
I would like to see reviews on that 4gb card with the 256 bit bus? it has the bandwidth of a 580 roughly. might start choking with the extra memory an high aa eye candy
What I mean is Nvidia isn't going to lower the price to the point where demand is so high they start running out of chips to sell, which I suppose is down to how many working chips TSMC can turn out rather than how much they might cost.
Ordered. Realy can't wait... Faster performace, less power draw... SLI here I come... Now, time to sell my 580's.
Not exacly . But there is a point , in MANY games HD7970 in multi monitor res beats GTX680. But id say AMD will have to drop the price.
