So i currently have Seagate 7200.12 barracuda 500gb, Not issue with it after 23157 of power on time which is around 3 years of one time at this point and 12 relocated sectors. It still works as good as the day I got it. And to this date have always used a seagate HDD and have been for 25+ years.

Now since I made this my Backup drive/Games HDD I have started to run out of space on it. So i started looking around for 1 or 2 TB HDD Any recommendations? A HDD that is quieter or just as quiet as what I have and Faster if possible would be great I get about 75-95 read/write and 230~290 random iops read/write speeds off of Sata II.

Was looking at the WD new Black drives and at the seagate desktop hdd .15

    I just bought a 2TB ST2000DM001 and it's great, I'm pretty sure it's the fastest 2TB drive available.
There are 2 versions of the drive though, make sure you get the one with indents like shown in the picture.

    Indented.

    Not indented.

if they are within the same generation, then yes, the model of the newest gen is ST1000DM003

I've had several ST2000DM001 drives (all indented versions), and I still have two. The first lot I bought them I must have had a bad batch, because two out of three were faulty. I posted about this on here a while back :). I gave them a second try a bit later and had no issues with them.

I believe they are the second best standard drive to get at the moment, but of course it's also a personal preference thing.

I think the best ones are the Toshiba's, as Eclap has mentioned. I have the 3 TB versions (DT01ACA300).

I say best and second best standard drive, as there are better drives around, they just cost a lot more! (Enterprise drives)

Apparently Seagate are bringing out drives with 1.3 TB /platter this year using a new recording technology, so the favour may tip back to Seagates advantage when these are released.

yo pill, check out my post higher up, the new one comes in 2 and 3 platter, both have the indents but one is a deeper indent, and the faster one (2 platter) has an engraved square barcode. thats the one you want to go for

I thinking one of these 2
    WD1003FZEX

    ST1000DM003

Might go for 2TB verison of one of the 2, Shall see after while of look around, if I stick with seagate or try something new

Afaik the only non-enterprise 2TB HDD available is the ST2000DM001 which is 3 platter:

    ST1000DM003 is 1TB, that's what the ST1000DM003 part means.... :)

I think there were a few problems with the 3TB drives, no idea if they've been sorted out.

Hi, ive been running a sata2 1.5tb Seagate baracuda since 2010 maybe earlier, was used as storage and also ran my games off it...never had any issues and it still runs like new although i now run my games off my WD velociraptor sata3 1tb drive which is also a fantastic drive although expensive but you get what you pay for

    After looking at Clawedge's link I realized I posted a pic of the 3TB Constellation when it should have been this one;

    Indented

Hi you're right there are 2&3 platter versions but according to the datasheet they have the same density and transfer speed......

Hate to tell you guys but I think your Toshiba's are actually rebranded Hitachi Deskstars which have a very high fail rate.

That may be why they were cheap.

Most hard drives have similar fail rates. Seagate seem to produce the most unreliable drives atm. I've been rocking a Hitachi Deskstar 500gb drive for some years now, not a single problem. Do you have any proof/figures with these fail rates pill?

Edit: I could've had a 2tb Seagate for similar money, but I chose Toshiba.

    Got 2 of these suckers:

Any HDD with 1tb platters would be fastest in market today.
