Just bought 2x 290's which are arriving tomorrow but realized when I got home that I only have a corsair HX750 not a 850 like I thought!

I've check with most retailers in UK for somthing like a seasonic 1000w etc but nothing in stock! The highest PSU in stock is the Corsair AX860, it this worth buying or shall I just hang on for a 1000w?

Will the HX750 manage the 2x 290 for the time being?

    I'm running, 2500k @ 4.6Ghz, D5 pump, 1x 7200 HDD, 1x 256SSD

Hmmmm.. dunno it's a high quality unit so it's rated output should be higher than what it is.. if you run the 290s stock maybe you'll be fine? That 860w should do the job though.

A good 850w unit should cover it if you've no joy with your current. If you really want a more powerful PSU however, OCUK have a few. As does Ebuyer. Here's a store that's local to me with a so-so deal on also: Coolermaster Silent Pro M2 1000W. Worth looking into if you find yourself needing/wanting the extra power.

I've seen the ax860 at ccl which is 30mins away from me. Ebuyer dont seem to have many of the good models and I find OCuk a tad pricey.

Just seems a waste to buy a 860watt when a 1000watt is only a few quid more yet outta stock! :(

Hate waiting but seems that will be the way, the HX 750 seems to be holding up well atm.

290x cfx running on a 750 psu should be fine for now, just don't push them too hard until you get your upgrade.

Personally I'd take the ax860 over those other 1000w... the 850 can handle this setup with ease.

Yeah I agree the AX860 is an awesome PSU but the Seasonic Platinum 1000W has a great review on Johnny Guru. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story5&reid=264

Assuming it is actually the Platinum series OP is referring too....if both PSU's are a similar price I know which one I'd take. Just my 2c.

Ofc if it's not the Platinum well that's a whole different story... :)

Using one of the online PSU calculator (http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine), and entering things like 3 hard drives, 1 SSD, a couple of fans, 4 USB devices for the stuff I didn't know to enter, it came out at:

    Minimum: 801 W
    Recommended: 851 W

That is at 90 percent total system load (meaning everything is running at 90 percent load, like the GPU's, CPU etc, as well as attached devices). Of course, could also mean the CPU is at 100 percent, GPU at 82 percent and so on.

    With a 10 percent capacitor ageing, you're out to 881 W and 931 W.

If you completely bastardise the system to 100 percent, no capacitor ageing, it is 890 W minimum, 940 W recommended.

    A bastardised sysem with 10 percent capacitor ageing, you're looking at 979 W minimum, 1029 W recommended.

So, an 860 W PSU should do, because you won't be bastardising the system lol. If you push the system hard though with the 750 W PSU, it will really be working hard which means more heat, capacitors age quicker, which reduce their efficiency...

On the other hand, the 1000 W PSU you were looking at gives you a comfortable headroom in the future, and means in almost all cases the PSU isn't working hard. Remember at the moment you probably won't be maxing out your GPU's with games, but never know what the future holds.

GPU's are prob flat out as i'm running 1600p with BF4 at ultra. On a sidenote some of the textures in BF4 are crap at 1600p!

I've been looking at the seasonic plat and gold along with the coolermaster v1000.

That 100 percent (the system bastardisation ;)) means you are running every component at 100 percent, including drives etc. The majority of the power used though would be the CPU (which I had entered as your 4.6 GHz overclock) and the GPU's, so it would probably be safer with a 1000 W PSU.

I personally wouldn't pay £160 for the AX860i when you can get good 850W Corsair/Seasonic/XFX etc units at 80+ gold for over £40 less. Hell, the Corsair RM850 was on sale for £99.99 a week or so ago, that's some £60 less than the AX860i

    Yeah, neither would I.

Also have to agree with the Platinum if they are around the same price, not sure for the OP but around here the difference is about $70 can.

Cry, what are the prices of the units you're looking at?

normal 860 is £142, Seasonic is £193. Price doesn't really bother me so I'll be going for the seasonic soon as it comes into stock somewhere.

Sounds good, no point not to if price isn't an issue.

Platinum costs a lot more than gold. Is the normal 860 gold? If so, avoid it, get yourself a Seasonic oem gold unit like xfx 850w for around £115.
