My CPU will randomly get insanely warm when in idle mode. Temps will rise to 100 and the fan becomes obnoxiously loud, it's usually fixed by 1-2 reboots. This happened once a very long time ago and then went away so I just forgot about it, now it has happened two days in a row however. Any ideas what it could be? My CPU is an i5 2500k overclocked to 4GHz.
What motherboard are you using? Have you looked for a bios update? What were you doing when the temps spiked? What power supply are you using?
definatly get a better cooler only way to overclock also ensure good case air flow got my hot phenom x4 955 at 3.8 temp i get is 43c on air idle today was 27c in the summer they both raise a little max i got last summer was 49c i have ocz gladiator max http://www.ocztechnology.com/ocz-gladiator-max-cpu-cooler-eol.html
MSI P67A-C45 My BIOS version is the latest. I was browsing the internet. Corsair 650W 80+ To the others: I know that the stock cooler sucks, but it has been working good so far. Game temps rarely exceed 60c and this problem is different since it just becomes warm out of random.
You said your temp reached was 100C. Even under full load while hardcore testing you shouldnt get much higher than 72C. You havent stress tested your system, with those temps you are rapidly wearing out your CPU. You may find it now runs even hotter, needing higher voltage to get the same overclock making it run doubly hot. This kind of wear will accelerate unless you stop doing it.
I think you're misunderstanding me. I've stress-tested my OC with Prime 95 and it's fine. This is completley unrelated. The computer just throws random heat fits while in idle, I'm wondering what may be causing it.
It is related unless you have a loosely fitted heatsink. If your heatsink is loose, it may be responsible for fluctuating temps at idle. Assuming your heatsink isnt loose (make sure it is solid), your CPU is capable of reaching 100C. Have you checked that it is actually idle when you think it is? What are your P95 temps and how long did you run it for on all cores. Answer honestly, you wont fix your problem otherwise.
What temperature monitoring software are you using? It could just be a software glitch. I'm not a fan of Speedfan, I usually use RealTemp or Hardware Monitor. You can set RealTemp up to keep a log file so you can review and verify what happened.
I removed my heatsink a few weeks ago to reapply thermal paste, will check again that it's stuck properly. I had the same problem months ago though so doubt it's it. It's completley idle. My CPU never reaches 100C, I can't imagine anything that would make it so hot. CPU load is 0%. I ran P95 for about 1h I believe, it was a while ago and I think the max was around 74. After playing Witcher 2 for a few hours the maxtemp was about 60, a bit more. I use CoreTemp to monitor. I suppose it could be a software issue but I actually hear the fan getting louder.
Yes I will take a look on the heatsink tommorow. Currently 2.40 am over here. I'l report back. What do you mean by reset?
He said "reseat" I'm trying to think of a way this could happen electrically while the CPU isnt under any load. It doesnt sound possible. Ordinarily, the CPU can only produce more than idle temps if it is processing. Only processing can generate significantly more heat. In order for it to use more power/produce more heat while it isnt processing, there has to be another path for current to flow. There isnt enough spare space on the CPU die to generate that amount of heat. Generating that kind of heat on say a sliver of silicon would vapourise it. I'm very interested to hear if the problem continues, could be a good head scratcher.
