true, but clock for clock IB still wins so if i want my moderate OC at say... 4.5 which is before it hits thermal limit it still sits around 5% increase and I get PCI-e 3.0 access for future.

Exactly. There are only really two kinds of people that would go higher than that:
    - Noobs (including idiots who think they know better)
    - Enthusiasts, who have proper cooling set up.

You need a baseline of the room being the warmest its likely to get when using the computer, and the CPU running 100 percent, with an eye on temperatures. If 4.9 is not stable and you think 4.8Ghz is stable, the sensible thing would not be to use 4.8...! (4.7Ghz is more sensible)

Yeah but you cant clock it quite as high, so it balances out for performance and costs less.
Whatever difference there is will be small anyway and not worth the money.

I will probably stick at 4.5GHz, that's plenty for me. Now I just need the bloody things to go on sale!

A decent water cooling setup stays with you for future builds allowing higher overclocks, extending the chip's life and keeping noise levels down. It's well worth it in the long run.

true that, but it requires a large amount of disposable income which not everyone has. I'd rather just re-invest in new tech when needed rather than a pricy loop.

@oc argument. I wont go higher than that either if I do.

    22nm - 4.9GHz at 1.4v for a long run?
Sorry, but I'm not buying this.

For me and I think for the most peoples out there, 1.42v was reasonable MAX for Sandy Bridge (32nm)
And trust me, this isn't something taken from the air.

You must be very lucky, or they send you a golden chip for a review.

    Look here: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i7-3770k-i5-3570k_9.html
There are more reviews out there saying exactly the same.

The truth is that overclocking potential is even WORSE than Sandy Bridge due to very high temperatures.

IMHO, Intel failed a bit, why?
Well, high end CPUs were made for overclocking, I know it's a new technology... but this? :(
Trust me, I'm not alone with that feeling.

true that. info please:nerd: nm I read the explanation :wanker:
anyways I will wait for a new revision first before considering an IB chip.

I'm perfectly satisfied with my 2600K. Now I just need a cooler that actually works....

I do like the UEFI for the DZ77GA-70K though.....now I feel jipped cuz my UEFI screen looks like it was designed for kids.

The one thing I do like about Ivy Bridge is the enhanced AVX instructions. Damn are those nice. I wonder how well emulators will perform on these bad boys.

I haven't kept up with emulators for a long time, but have any of them even started using instructions past SSE3?

Why need more than your i5 750 has to offer ?

Couldnt find single game that would use it properly.

Would there be sense in upgrading i7-975 to 3770K?

what about the revision from CPU-Z? Isn't Revision E1 an ES ?

edit: since im venting here, i might answer your post:

Nehalem (your CPU) is going pretty strong, so in your case, you can still wait, the performance gain is close to nothing, and the OC of ivy bridge is crap, probably you get better clocks on your CPU, so no, wait for haswell or ivy bridge-e.

edit2: wow i underestimated intel's hd 4000 IGP, HON (heroes of newearth) runs smooth on max settings
