My friend's PC needs a fresh install of Windows 7 because for some reason the one already installed corrupted. Since his DVD drive was useless as always, we tried a USB installation. The problem is everytime we click install now, it asks for the drivers of the media. Any solutions for this? We've already tried the switch USB port method but it still persists.
Have you ever installed from the installation files currently on the flash drive? Meaning, do you know if the flash drive\files work properly or is this error specific to your friend’s machine. What are his specs?
He claims he's installed from that same USB before. Although we have formatted the USB, which by the way is 4gb, we forgot how we even put it there from the DVD. He's on a Pentium Dual core, 1gb ram and on an ECS mobo. I'll have to ask him tomorrow for his full specs.
The best way to install Windows 7 from a USB stick is to use Microsoft's own tool for getting the installation files copied properly from the ISO file.
Never used the MS tool before. This is how I do it, only takes a minute, never had an issue. Type: cd c:\Windows\system32 Type “diskpart” Type “list disk” Select Disk # Type: Clean Type: Create Type: Select Type: Active Type: Format FS=NTFS Type: Assign Type: Exit Copy disc contents to “Windows 7” folder on Desktop. Type: cd “C:\Users\USERNAMEHERE\Desktop\Windows 7\” Type: CD Boot Type: Bootsect.exe /nt60 *: (* = drive) Copy all of the extracted ISO files onto the USB drive. Drag and drop the files from the “Windows 7” folder into the drive using Windows Explorer. To have all OS versions on one flash drive: delete ei.cfg file.
The tool consists of choosing the ISO file, choosing the media you want to prepare (USB or DVD), and waiting for it being prepared. No typing whatsoever.
