I like the installer look, reminds me of iOS a lot though

Actually it looks pretty nice once booted too, well polished

There are no "useless" distros.....except Linspire and Xandros...

That not true there are all useless after all there multiple distributions versions and other big problem is because of multiple distributions versions you end up with multiple application distributions installer versions with no common characteristics.
Don't get me wrong it has come long ways when I first play with it back in late 90's just before Slackware "96" 3.1 thank god it come out on CD I hated the Floppy ver 70+ disc.

But i always install them in vmware player. I don't think my hardware makes any difference and Ubuntu did not have any stability issues. Mint would do strange things like not boot at all after updates or lock up completely without any errors.

Like I said, probably due to having different kernel employed and/or default driver sets.
Doesn't matter if you're using VMWare or not, because it's still a case of two distros being installed on the same hardware config but one of them is rather unstable.

Just because Mint is based on Ubuntu doesn't mean they'd behave the same.
If anything both of them have their roots on Debian, and it's not a guarantee they'd both be as rock-solid as Debian.

Such is the life of GNU/Linux users. =b
At some point you'd be considered lucky enough to have your sound working properly.

You could probably ask around over at Mint's forums, or searching through their FAQs.
Not all distro would work fine on emulated hardware, and sometimes there are certain VMWare settings that'd make some distro tick.

Have you tried it on VirtualBox?

No not yet .. I'll try VB if their next release is also unstable for me in Vmware player.

I am very hesitant to use Ubuntu, or any Ubuntu based distros. I'll stick with Manjaro/Arch Linux.

I stick with OpenSuSE and Fedora mostly. I give Ubuntu a shot every couple years and it always disappoints me. I test using LiveCD or LiveDVD and Ubuntu always has major performance or stability issues for me. This past run, it did fine on my PentiumD 915 system but was worthless on the system in my specs to the left.

I am quite tempted to try Ubuntu Phone though....if I only had a second N4...

The significance of this 13.10 release is that it will serve as the base code for next years Ubuntu smart phone OS, which will be compatible with android devices and apps.

Hasn't that kind of been pushed with Mir being delayed?

Canonical already pushed out Ubuntu Phone.... It was released on Friday. The UI looks like a clone of SmartLauncher

    No, it's not.
13.10 still only has Xorg and Unity 7.

Mir/Xmir and Unity 8 have been pushed to 14.04 LTS, or 14.10 if there's any more delay.

The one for smartphones already have Mir onboard, while the desktop version does not, although you can manually install it.
The one for the smartphones already have Unity 8, while the desktop one still uses Unity 7.
13.10 for desktop is different from the 13.10 for mobiles.

The real base that would really span across platforms in terms of features would be 14.04 LTS, if not 14.10.

Ah, but it seems canonical would want you to assume otherwise from their news release of 13.10. Also mir is available as an option for desktop in 13.10 (default on smartphones).

Ubuntu 13.10 includes first step to mobile / PC convergence
