I know it pointless but hey ..its been a hobby along time and I got a good tax return.....am I the only overkill guy....just curious
1080ti is overkill for 1080p 144Hz+? Lol noway! The only resolution that is pointless for 1080ti is 640x480 no antialiasing. In my book, card is not overkill for any resolution with high refresh rate when it holds 120fps ALL TIME when on HIGHEST game settings and HIGHEST in game aa. For instance, my 1080 can't do that.
Yes, it's overkill. But you can use DSR or supersampling (in games that support it) when you find the GPU is not doing much. The resulting 4K downlsampling gets you film-like anti-aliasing that looks great With that being said, I would look for a high refresh 1440p monitor. Perfect for a 1080 Ti.
Aren't these CPU-heavy games? You sure it's the GPU? Did you actually test and verify that's the case?
I felt my GTX 1080 was just about right finally for 1080P at 60Hz. Especially if you like using DSR or SSAA. Now I've gone to 4k and moved to 1080Ti I'm back at the start. Such is the advancement of tech.
My 980ti didnt let me run maxed at 1080p in a few games. As stated above now I can use 4K DSR or just under to get the best AA + detail and hug 60fps permanently in everything. Its very handy for VR as well.
4K DSR is 4K, not 1080p In other words, if you run 4x DSR on a 1080p monitor, it doesn't count as 1080p. It's just straight-up 4K. And for that, you need a 1080 Ti to get acceptable frame rates at maxed out settings. There is no difference between playing on a 4K monitor compared to playing at 4x DSR on a 1080p monitor. It's exactly the same thing (from the machine's perspective; the monitors themselves obviously have big differences.)
At 1080p it's very easy to get cpu limited especially at high framerates. But as times passes and games becoming more demanding, that bottleneck keeps reducing, so your investment lasts longer. Also the best cpu today still bottlenecks a gtx1080ti when playing 1080p 144hz.
Difference is, I have a 1080p display and get the best AA without having to use any other AA. That was a major part of my decision and why I quoted you because you said exactly that. Not understanding why the ball ache? For those that game at 4K without AA its the same. But if you need AA at 4K, not quite the same. ps I have a 1080ti.
I found every 1080p Monitor can get a custom resolution of 2560x1440 in Nvidia custom resolution. Looks good and desktop is a better text and browsing size. I've got my PSVR running 2560x1440 120hz and she is beautiful.
What I always found funny. Was that for numerous generations of cards, the latest flag ship was always deemed overkill for 1080P. I remember hearing that back with a GTX480 and maybe even earlier. Yet there would always be games that would want more gpu performance. And now you have DSR warranting it on a 1080P screen if that's your thing. I've always found the word overkill to rarely be valid for PC enthusiasts.
pretty late to the party here as i dont usually frequent these subforums...but uh. why didnt anyone suggest that he spend the exact same amount of money on a 1070/1080 & new monitor @1440 w/ 75hz+ refresh? the guy asked for sensible advice & you guys are way off focus debating about downscaling
Well, not really that far off focus imo, as some of us don't think its overkill. And what we're saying is that if the guy likes using DSR or SSAA then persoanlly I say crack on. All opinions at the end of the day. The guy is asking if a 1080ti is valid at 1080P.
