Just as many people if not more would pirate games if they were all DRM free.

It was more than letters, they hired law firms to chase after people.

Of course, this is all past and they're not doing it anymore.

    Yep.

We really have to differentiate between those who pirates and those who cracks the DRM; they are very, very rarely one and the same.
Those who seeks to get something for free will just keep trying to get it for free; a game being DRM-free won't change that one bit.
Those who pirates 'just to try first because there's no demo' (and actually bought the game later if he/she really likes it) are the idealist minority.
Those who pirates 'on principles' however are the stupid majority, which usually consists of professional bullsh!tters and/or hypocrites, often conveniently forgets that games are not part of the human basic needs.

Though I do agree about the notion that DRM (often) does more harm to legit users than pirates.
