I own 8800GTX, what are the best drivers to stop stuttering in UT2004 on XP please ?

    edit your Unreal Engine 2 game.ini (system/ut2004.ini ?), find these lines and change the settings to:

    UseHardwareTL=False
    UseHardwareVS=True
    MaxPixelShaderVersion=1


    UseHardwareTL=False
    CPU will now do some of the GPU's work , and the stutter stops.

    MaxPixelShaderVersion=1
    With default max pixel shader version (255) you get corrupt/ugly textures, this make maps look normal.

    All in all, those tweaks helped me and my UE2 games when I had XP and 8800. Frame rates got down little from expected (came from 7900GT), but I reckon you still get +100fps

    When/if you move to Vista, some UE2 games still cause problems if you're using AMD dual core cpu - you need to install the AMD Dual Core Optimizer

    What stutter?
    I've never experienced any problems with UT2004 when I switched to my GTX. It runs more beautiful and faster than ever...

    None really, its an issue with geforce 8 series and unreal engine 2. we are screwed, haven't had any with 6600gt and now with 8800 lol now that just suckS, yes u can try that as Barton said, but there is a massive performance drop. Well with newer drivers it seems to be a bit better but not perfectly smooth, and lol that happens in my case mostly in small levels, strange wolud have thought first in bigger levels but not the small ones (Compressed, Grendle keep,...)

    Yes, some ppl noticed the stutter, others didn't. Can't say all who claimed "no stutter!" played all maps.

    Also, it was much map depending phenomena, where maps with much built terrain caused problems.

    I was hugely disappointed with how 2k4 ran on my new rig.. now that I have an 8800, I reckon it would be even worse, so I'm just waiting patiently for U3, becuase I found that the stuttering was subtle, but enough so that it took away from the smoothness all around. It was this weird sort of stutter.. not like stutters you would see in other games. This stutter was consistent, and nothing I tried fixed it.

    Either youre PSU is too weak. Or maybe its some bug with 8800 and UE2?? I think the drivers still are in a bad shape for the g80 gpu´s. When or If nvidia will find a way to improve the drivers, I think all of us with g80 gpu´s will se a performance gain in many games actually! So its not youre gpu, its either the drivers or some incompatibility issue with UE2 engine?

    This is a confirmed problem with XP and 8xxx graphics cards, here's the thread at nvidia's site. (Link)

    Those of you claiming to not have stuttering, are you using Windows XP? This issue is fixed in any recent Vista driver, but not XP. If you are on XP, try walking around in the flag rooms on CTF-Citadel.

    Those are my settings when I checked them in the .ini file.
    I ran Trainingsday with 12 bots 1600x1200 4xAA 16xAF: 60+ FPS
    I ran CTF-Citadel same settings, went to both flagrooms: 100+FPS

    And I can tell you I played a lot of maps and I have never experienced any stuttering or slowdowns.

    Well, you dont seem to have that problem with UT2004, but many do. I'm sure a "plain" 7900GT 256MB would beat those fps numbers tho.

    And again, specify if you're using XP. Also tell us about your weaponview because if you turn it off it may look like the stuttering is gone but that is NOT the case. Turn on weaponview when testing these things. FPS doesn't matter, this stuttering occurs DESPITE high FPS.

    I was using XP. And that FPS is quite high (high enough on a 60hz screen) considering I was using 4xAA supersampled. And my P4 is probably bottlenecking.
    I had weaponview off, but really if there were any stuttering I'd noticed. I can't aim properly when stuttering, but this was fluid as hell.
    I'll try with weaponview then.... brb

    EDIT: ouch, ok that did it. But who cares, I'm not playing with weapons on anyway, so I'll never be hindered :)

    Same here with XP Pro and 8600GT, terrible stuttering in Raven Shield if T&L not disabled.

    Perhaps if enough people complain about this to NVidia, they would actually DO SOMETHING about it? Where can I send email to them anyway, couldn't find any way to send them driver feedback (if vista feedback doesn't count)?

    hello, i'm just a new member, i saw this thread about the problems of UE on nvidias 8xxx , i have one nvidia 8600gt and "XIII the game" that uses unreal engine, on XP the game runs faster and in windows vista runs slower: some people says it's because the XP O.S that can't handle with core 2 duo processors but in windows vista the game runs very slow (my processor is a core 2 duo t7500 2.2Gh (laptop))

    Removes all the stutter what I know of (havent got UT2k4 installed). But in the same time fps will be reduced much.

    Many UT2004 players set their "show first-person weapon" to off, that itself reduces stutter to maps that have terrain (means they dont use the tweak, no stutter to be seen they say...but they never played all maps ! LOL )

    Maxpixelshaderversion=255
    in Ravenshield, textures were screwed up with UseHardwareTL=False (texture on terrain only), so Maxpixelshaderversion=1 fixed that problem. However, in a third UE2 game, Devastation, some textures became translucent, the fix isn't complete (yes, you guessed it, terrain texture)

    None of those problems with Vista.

    Last night I installed my 8800GTS 640MB in my server PC, just for fun to see if the stutter still was there (server has XP)...dispite 13 months has gone since first user responses, the last XP WHQL driver showed all same bugs..stutter.
    Some games dont have the "hide 1st p weap".

    nope, couldn't find it either :) does it stutter ?
    test changing HardwareSkinning=TRUE or some other variables. make a backup of the original file first.
