i am running a MSI 760GM-P23 with 8 gig of ram Raid 5 with 4 3TB drives ect. This is the storage we use this server for streaming movies and MP3's for the whole fam It has an AMD Athlon II x2 240 at 2.8ghz because i like to run Folding@home and with the CPU i have now it take 1 day to do 1 work unit using 2 cors uke2: my i7 can do 14 from what i remember:nerd: would like to get some thing faster in there What would be the best cpu to run bang for buck and what would i expect from them. i can look at bench marks all day but i don't know how they are going to perform with Folding@Home what i am looking at now i am going to run them stock no over clocking AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition at $89.99 Phenom II X6 1045T 2.7Ghz at $105 FX-8120 8-Core @ 3.1Ghz at $155 FX-8320 8-Core @ 3.5GHz at $162
Given the 8150 is only $7 cheaper than 8320 it prob shouldn't even be included... The 8320 is much faster than a 1045.
are you going to dedicate all cores for folding or leave some cores for other processes? For SMP you'll need at least 2 cores. Intel usually do better with SMP, but not as good as AMD for uni-processor core. for example with FX-8320, you could dedicate 6 cores for folding (smp(6)) and leave 2 cores for s_treaming and other processes. Anyway, I recommend going for FX-8320, since it got more cores and better per core performance. With 8 cores, you could flexibly adjust which cores you would like to use for folding and which for the rest of processes. However, comparing to Intel, you won't win on SMP PPD and electricity bill. On a long run, it might be reasonable going for Intel, since it will give you more PPD, while consuming less electricity.
IIRC, on stock, BD is on par with SB on wattage, if not lesser; only when you start to OC it the wattage skyrockets.
Actually, you right on idles. I was comparing to 8150 (bulldozer). 8350(piledriver) got massive optimization on energy usage. Still, it consumes more on load than 2600k (3770k consumes even less) http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2012/11/06/amd-fx-8350-review/7 (Also, after checking PPD with recent projects, I can't vouch for better performance either :S) But it is another reason going for 8350, rather then older AMD cpus.
Kinda shows how much AMD has risen on my "don't really care" list. =b That page leads to another interesting article, though: mATX boards seem to consume less wattage for the same workload with the same hardware.
On a side note (and not trying to defend Vishera)but Bit Tech could not have used more poorly optimized games for 8320 test if they tried...both Skyrim and Shogun use like 2.5 cores or something. Shogun especially is about 1.5 cores...
The things is, we weren't talking about its gaming performance. If anything, the relevant ones in regard to folding are the Cinebench and WPrime benchmarks. Besides, sverek and I were talking about its wattage on load, not its (gaming) performance.
Yeah I'm just speaking generally, not related to your comments.....didn't really pay attention to what you guys said tbh.
The thought that it's fine to post something unrelated after giving $0.02. Can we just stick to thread's subject, please?
i would say the 8350 from a power side of thing is it will score more points than the other, i don't have any number's for amd cpu as im not running any(coming across any number in other forums is hard to find as well number keep change with all these new wu) are you planning to OC what motherboard are you running can it support a high powered cpu?
all this is on the first post...... i am not over clock the AMD cpu because of the wattage they are at stock.
Well with folding at home the more cores you can throw at it the better. So with your current upgrade path the 8320 is probably the best choice. Similar to what other people said, unless you are willing to change to a Intel path.
Update The new cpu is crashing when running 6 or 8 cores I posted in the AMD M/B CPU if Andy one can help post here http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=371889
