I'm having a friend pick up a 5820k from Microcenter ($300), but I can't decide on a motherboard. Wanted an ASUS board but the three out right now don't feel too decent at the prices they are commanding. Plus the Deluxe has an abnormally high idle power usage (+25W) on Hilbert's review which makes me a little worried if it isn't a BIOS or configuration issue as this'll be a workstation that will be on most of the time. I might lean on a cheap MSI board since there should be a X99 refresh coming out in a year or more with Broadwell-E, by then there should be a much better selection, and hopefully some good MATX boards to switch to later.

He probably didnt bother to disable all those extra useless features for most people. X99-A will likely be $300~

As soon as I can get my hands on an mATX x99 board in the UK I will be upgrading... Probably going for the 8 core!

Yes. That's the text on the Asus website.
And speaking of pins, they are are almost 102% compatible :D

I've just come to realize, will broadwell CPUs be able to use that Asus OC socket? What if they don't have the contacts for those extra pins like Haswell-E because they don't need them anymore out of better efficiency? Does one need a new mainboard then if one goes for Asus?

I don't know about beastly Vet but if I can go 5.3ish -70 1.58ish it would be a start but I will see what I can do I am just going to do 3d benches with it anyway.
4.5 on a decent AIO watercooling setup would be a ok start also

Then I can take the ln2 pot off the 4930k/Rive setup and use that as a 24/7 rig for me.

What is it that people like 8Pack have compared to everyone else apart from binned chips that do make a big difference, apart from that its trial and error isnt it?

Well first he is built like a brickwall other people don't have that either same thing on his clocks.it takes a bit more then hardware SOMETIMES.
on the level he is it takes a bit more ALL THE TIME

Its just knowledge bro he has got plenty, if you trial and know how to fix any error you are 1 step up on others.
me I just want fun from overclocking
