I'm using my Nintendo DS MP3 Player as an MP3 player. It supports up to 4GB SD cards and the sound is great! :)

Well there's Rockbox:http://www.rockbox.org, which is a complete firmware replacement for a bunch of MP3 players, not sure about 3RD gen compatibility, but it works on most ipods.

I have a rockboxed 6GB iRiver H10 with a dead hard drive, hopefully I'll replace it with a brand-new 12GB drive sometime soon.

Creative Zen Vision M 30GB. The thing is awesome, plays music, movies and pictures. Battery life has been a lot better than I expected as well.

The ipod 3G got rockbox support; you can even play some games (like doom) on the ipod 3G after the modification.

    Daily builds:
    http://www.rockbox.org/dl.cgi?bin=ipod3g

    manual:
    http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-ipod3g/rockbox-build.html

    plug-ins (games):
    http://download.rockbox.org/manual/rockbox-ipod3g/rockbox-buildch8.html#x11-1020008

    Good luck!

Well I've decided to get a Gigabeat F40 instead. Nice big screen, lots of space and most importantly: Rockbox!
