Motherboard wise. I'd give one of these a go.

    ASRock Z77 Extreme6
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157295

    ASUS P8Z77-V PRO
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131819

If you have the funds for it, I'd also recommend the ASUS ROG Maximus V Formula. I personally love mine. Here's a link to it.

For memory, I'd go with 16 gigs of good 2133 DDR3. G.skill, Kingston HyperX, or Corsair. You can't really go wrong with any of those three. I do like Kingston's lifetime warranty, and both Kingston and G.skill are great value for performance.

    Good luck to you. :)

Your 6870 is already bottle necked from your cpu let alone putting a 680 in lol.

OK guys thanks for all the info on the parts and suggestions. All the motherboards listed appear to use Dual Channel Memory. I was looking at the Alienware Aurora Desktops say, they use Quad Channel Memory.

So the question is, if a motherboard says Dual Channel Memory and if I install 4x2GB of Ram Sticks, is the motherboard now running Quad Channel? :stewpid:

Unless you plan on going for an X79 platform you're going to be running dual channel. I'd go for 2x4 gig sticks personally, filling all your memory banks with 2 gig modules isn't a great idea.

There is little to no effect running quad channel RAM in gaming and the price of X79 is rediculous for the minor gain you get compaired to a 1155 socket Z77 board.

So I take it the Alienware Aurora desktops are using an X79 motherboard? :3eyes:

Damn, that's not a bad deal then. I've configured an Aurora Desktop with an ALX Chassis, liquid cooled, 16GB of ram, 3TB HDD, and dual 7870's for $2049. :3eyes:

That is a bad deal, you're probably looking at a 3820 and an AIW loop rather than proper water cooling. You could build better yourself for quite a bit less, and without the needlessly expensive X79 setup.

OK tell me what you guys think about this setup, doing it myself? I'm currently using a Lian-Li (PC-V1000BW) aluminum mid tower case

Why go X79? You're better off saving some money and going with a Z77 setup.

I ran the numbers and i'd save a little less than $100 by going with a z77 setup. An AS Rock z77 mobo is about $135, i7-3770K $320, 16GB of DDR 1600 Mhz $120. :3eyes:

You don't need an I7 for gaming, you also don't need 16 gigs of RAM.

    3570K = $200
Z77 Motherboard = $80 + depending on the feature set you want.
    16gb of G Skill Ripjaws = $125

You can probably get some of those parts for less depending on where you shop, more so if you can get to a Micro Center. Pretty sure you can pick up a 3770K from one for around $220, or a 3570K for $180.

It's your money at the end of the day. You'll have the option to upgrade to a six core in the future if you feel the need with an X79 setup, although they're very expensive.

Sure thing, give me a moment.

    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB $125
    3570K $189.99
    3770K $229.99
    MSI Z77A-G41 $89.99 after MIR

Newegg and Tigerdirect prices listed on the Microcenter pages for the CPU's for comparison. Only checked Newegg for the motherboard, although you should be able to match or beat that price with other motherboards on different websites.

I'd reconsider those motherboard choices, the H61 is a budget board with very limited features. The B75 is also limited compared to Z77's within the same price range. You really want to be matching a K series chip with a Z77. As for the GPU, while the 680 is a fantastic GPU it's also a little costly for what you get. It's worth considering a 670/7970/7950 if you're at all interested in saving some cash.

Put the money you save from going with the revised setup toward a soundcard and some nice headphones, or an SSD if you don't have one.

I want to build it right so no money is not an issue. Heck I was seriously considering an Aurora desktop. I'm a sucker for their case. :stewpid:

OK scratch my two mobo options. I'll take your suggestion. How about 680 SLI?

EDIT: Do I need to buy a CPU fan? Any suggestions for an all aluminum mid tower case? I prefer Lian-Li

If you want to go SLI you'll need to spend a bit more on the motherboard to get one that's capable of it. You'll also need a new PSU. I'd personally look at 670 SLI or even Titan before I considered 680 SLI. That said, there are people running it who have very good experiences.
