    Hi All,

Upgraded my pc around Jan and got an i7 Haswell 4770k and 7990 MSI card.

The computer works generally without issue but I seem to be getting nowhere near the performance I should be getting out of this setup.

Ie Furmark 60 fps on 1080p res
Heaven 1600 score on extreme settings.

The final straw has came when I got Watchdogs and I am getting sub 20 fps standing around in corridors (all settings maxxed). Youtube ppl are posting vids of similar setups to mine and are getting 60-70 fps outside with everything maxxed out.

I would consider myself an advanced computer user and have tried a wide and varied range of to try and diagnose the problem but nothing is making the performance improve.

I am not overclocking and everything is on stock settings

    Full spec as follows:

    Corsair 850HX PSU
    gigabyte z87x-oc
    Haswell i7 4770k
    MSI 7990 - 6gb
    16GB DDR3 2400MHz HyperX XMP Beast Series
    OCZ 240gb ssd
    Creative SB Recon3d sound card
    Windows 8 pro 64

The only obvious thing I have not tested is a more powerful Power supply - but surely 850 Watt should be enough?

This computer should be tearing any game to pieces but while it is fast it should be much better than what it is. Has anyone any idea what could be wrong with this?

    Thanks,
    Dave

ps. I dont want replies along the following
Have you tried updating drivers - yes I have
Have you tried reinstalling windows - yes I have
Are you sure crossfire is on - yes it is
Have you updated the Bios - Yes I have
I am also not experiencing any BSOD or instability... the computer is rock solid

    Hi,

Furmark obviously throttles your gpu, not really a performance indicator. Try something like 3dmark Vantage or 3dmark11 or 3dmark Firestrike or more cpu bound HitmanAbsolution or Metro LL benchmark, but again be careful maxing out AA, that will kill any gpu.

Heaven 4 maxedout is huge tessellation bottleneck and 7000 doesnt really shine there, although it improved a lot vs AMD 5000& 6000 series.

Watchdogs again maxed out its killing your gpu, you're running out of vram (3gb mirrored, its not true 6gb) with ultra textures and max 8xmsaa

    ^
keep ultra textures and lower AA to postAA - ie FXAA or SMAA:)

Run 3dmark 11 and fire strike and post back with results. Forget about maxing out W_D, no pc is capable of that.

As mentioned, Watch Dogs eats up VRAM real fast on video cards. Some people were reporting over 4GB used with their Titans! That's more VRAM than a 290, or 290X has... The solution seems to lower AA, not use Ultra textures, and lower MSAA (I think it was MSAA, I don't have the game yet).

You know how it is, people set everything max in game while having CCC profile limiting AA/Tesselation/textures.

You'll never notice difference on YT unless AA is off completely.

Your score is a bit low.

    I´ve also had a 7990 with my 4770k and in 3dmark 11 it gave me 17233 (with 4770 at 4500 and 7990 at 1160/6600).

In firestrike it was around 12XXX.

I put my old 5870 into the machine and im instantly seeing performance increases across the board on all games (obviously in newer gpu intensive games its worse, but not much)...

The card 7990 I couldn't even touch it for a few minutes on attempting to remove it as it was so hot.

Im gonna test the card in another machine tomorrow but at this moment in time im fairly convinced ive got a bad card.

Well, my 7970 does not thermal throttle if overheated, it just goes slowly to the point where it triggers thermal shut down.

Maybe 7990 BIOS has that function. But even so, before you get it to 90°C you should have normal performance.
You should try to increase TDP (Power limit in CCC Performance Tab), no need to OC anything, especially not memory as bandwidth there is higher than GPUs need already.
If I take TDP limit down by 20% I end up losing around 50% performance.

he probably runs at stock or lower clocks than you. He's score is fine for a 7990. So there's no problem there, really. His PC performs as it should.

EDIT: I score 11.6k in fire strike too, scoring 16.5k ish in graphics score. So yeah, his graphics score is a bit down, but not majorly, I probably run higher clocks than him.

    Did you disable ULPS?
Can you check out GPU core clock behavior during the games using Afterburner software?

managed to get it tested in a different computer with an msi z87-g45 gaming board...

seems to be working fine... much higher fps... benchmarks scores

im suspecting a problem with my board / psu...

My psu is 4 years old... it has all of the modern connections and is a corsair hx850 but im starting to suspect it might just be causing the issue

what scores exactly did you get in the other rig? Your scores were about right (give or take) for a stock 7990.

The other computer was running an i5 4670k - no overclock

Heavan was getting 250 more in benchmark score
furmark was getting roughly around an extra 15 fps

tested new game wildstar... my pc 15-25 fps... test pc 40-60 fps

    something is definitely not right

Unfortunately I was limited for time so I didnt have time to test it in 3dmark etc

Im borrowing a new powercool 750 watt psu later I can test in my own machine later

    update...

After a long time diagnosing this - I had initially thought it was the psu but the card turned out to be faulty as confirmed by retailer... :(

In the UK I wouldn't buy anything other than a Superflower unit at the moment to be honest, EVGA use them as the OEM for their supplies also if it helps. The price / performance of them is fantastic, came very close to buying this supply myself a few weeks back:
