No I do not agree, we can say that technology is outdated or old only if something newer or better is out, but until nowadays there is nothing better than GK110 from Nvidia, I don't mind about AMD products.

So now I'm considering the 780 but the prices are still a bit off my scale. The 8xx series is comming (but when?). Should I wait a little and hope the prices go down?

Can't really see the price of the 780 going down much more than it costs now, if the current trend continues.

Wouldn't it help people moving to 8xx series?

Hard to say really... flagship cards over the past year and a half have been raising the price point to new highs while leaving the previous cards comfortably close to the MRP.

It's also going to depend on what AMD has on tap and how they price their current lineup.

Oh well, decided to take the risk and ordered an Asus GTX 780 DirectCU II 3GB. Lets hope it was a good investment. Should be here Monday or something.

I'm quite sure you'll like it

I have to say, I haven't gamed this smooth in a long time... combination of good hardware and well preforming drivers.

Lets us know what you think when you get it running.

Just here to tell you that this thing in gaming eats everything very smoothly (at least the games I have). About CUDA performance, it is what I would expect: a huge increase in real time rendering (3 or 4 Titans would be a lot better, but lets not overdo it).
Temps are 15º C less than the HD 5870 in load and in idle. They could be colder but my case isn't the best, I should change it in a near future. Actually, not being a reference card, it may be throwing more heat into the CPU area (even with the Noctua it may be an issue in Summer). If things get rough, off with the side cover ;)

Can't see the 6 GB version anywhere here. Even if I could it would be a lot more expensive (worse if would import it, damn taxes).
I won't be doing any SLI and for work it will have to be enough.

The 780 should be enough I'm glad you like the card it should be sufficient till the next line off tech rolls out to give us even better graphical games.

That card will do fine in many years to come. :)

It's not like that time anymore that you need to upgrade every year or 2.
A friend of mine plays any modern game fine on a GTX260, but ofc not with high fidelity but still it runs very good.
