Got a crazy bargain on the speakers, $70 for all 5 brand new , some dumbass at Kmart marked them down with a clearance ticket from $600...

got the amp for $299 on special ( $200 off )

At 9am tomorrow morning I am picking up my Sony 40 KDL EX500 40" 100hz LCD for my room with the above setup.

The sansui fronts are definitely lacking the bass of the yamaha ones below, but for the price...it was worth it.

Bought the speakers when I was 15 years old, the 2 fronts by themselves cost me $1600aus.... got the surrounds for around $300, the amp was $999.....stuff was a lot more expensive 10 years ago...

The speakers have not lost their value though, the current model yamaha speakers with slightly lower sound range and less watts go for $1299

Can anyone recommend me a good 10-12" self powered sub, the yamaha speakers don't need one, but i will either replace the sansui one, or just get a sub, and they work perfect, are less than a year old, and sounds great ( minus the lacking low end ), so it would be a shame to ditch them.

There is a yamaha sw215 which is only 75watt, but from what i've heard, the home subs of low wattage are still pretty damn good...

My budget is like $150 max...anything more and i'm better of replacing the whole thing. I'm in aus so i just need brand or model number recommendations, U.S stores are of no use to me in aus

 

Velodyne makes awesome subs, although i dont know if they make them in Australia. Prices normally run from 120-300 us dollars so.:deflate: the one i have works awesome.

Got myself a new TV today!

Little bit of a workout to get it on my wall unit but it looks great!

That was me who put the pic. We have the LG 47LH3000 £599 in Richer Sounds + £60 (10% of the price), for a 5 year warranty. It really is a fantastic TV, we're really impressed with it. You can get the 37" LG 37LF7700 (freest HD + freeview model), for £399 at RS atm aswell.

 

upgraded the TV to a 55" 1080p 120Hz

Also moved my Core i5 out in the living room and moved the HTPC to regular desktop usage.

 

Hopefully this is the right place. I'm looking into building my first home theater and i'm really overwhelmed by the hundreds of possibilities.

I'm in Canada and need guidance? I'm looking into ordering everything this week and will update everyone/post pictures once everything is setup. Budget around 4000$ or 5000$/CAD absolute MAX

Hopefully this can be productive and help more peeps figure out what to get especially for MKV playback.

Goals:
1- MKV!!! Play from internal hdd(iomega??)/ plugged usb key / transfer over wireless from desktop
2- burned DVD+/- R .avi playback
3- listen to mp3s
4-Wii (later on)
5-laptop connectivity (justin.tv content to showup on tv mainly...)

(Not interested in blu-ray discs or 3D TV)

5.1 audio system: I have no knowledge here. Would i need a A/V receiver If i got anything from here ?

Or if i got a good bluray player, something like this LG BD390 i wouldn't need a AV? Just plug 5.1 speakers to blu-ray player and i'm good to go?

5.1 NO CLUE? ~2000$?

with a samsung 23" monitor sitting in the naughty corner, because it has been retired by my 32" TV as my monitor

 

yeah you need a receiver it is what powers the speakers, so you cannot plug them into a blu-ray, you don't need $2000 to make a great setup, I got my amp for $300, blu ray for $250, and I got a set of speakers that were worth 600... on the cheap.

 

and the samsung Bxx and Cxx models are terrible with input lag

 

Would a Blu-ray player still be required to make all this function together? :

TV + Iomega ScreenPlay Director + A/V receiver + 5.1 speakers?

It seems like in store all 5.1 speakers are "bundled" with blu-ray players and not a/v receivers.

I use the LG and have no complaints

Google "input lag" and see which TVs are best. I found the LG I use to be pretty good while the Samsung's (while they look good) have terrible lag.

5.1 + a/v receiver

I really have no clue what to look for here. I need both but not over 2000$
The local store websites dont seem to have alot of choices.

Pioneer elite only THX certified one 770watt
1000$ a/v receiver only...

Some other a/v receivers are from harman/kardon and a cheap Onkyo. All of these are none THX certified and between 150-300watt. Is that worth it?


What about speakers? I mostly see Sinclair audio, soundstage or tannoy. Price range 1500-1000 + a/v receiver ~1000$...oh boy

JBL is too expensive.

Something like the Popcorn hour A200 or a Tvix 6600 would serve you nicely

 

Yep. I think i made up my mind for one thing on my list at least.

Popcorn Hour C-200 seems to beat Iomega and asus O!Play.

You can put in an internal hdd, use external hdd and add a blu-ray/dvd drive. I'll be adding some dvd drive (yet to figure out what model exactly) to view my retail/burned dvds.

Will get that remote and wifi which are seperate also.

Most importantly, c-200 seems to have the widest range of codecs and firmware support.

Anyone knowledgeable here? All i know is Onkyo is decent and denon is out of my price range big time. Need both receiver+5.1speakers for around 1500-1700$CAD MAX

Good choice, i meant the c-200 but i typoed and put the older a-200 in my post above.

In my now older Tvix 6500-a I've got a 2TB WD greenpower HDD (set to quiet mode), its great. Completely silent and i've got around 20 full Blu-ray rips and about 60 1080p .mkvs on there. Still got over 800gb left !!!!
