Nice card but like stated it just to expensive, i would just save the extra cash and get the 5850.

Fantastic Review as always Hilbert ;)

And yeah, it's too little for too much IMO.

Isn't that how all graphic card manufacturers do it?

First sentence you say there isn't a major performance difference, second sentence you say there is.

Rated 1.79 Tflops by ATi, in reality often only slightly faster than a 4870.

Nice review although i have a small complaint, it would be nice to see DX11 games benched, like Criostasis and Aliens vs Predator, so people can have a general idea on how this cards will run, after all the cards were made to run D11 games. Other than that, great review as always.

As for the card itself, i´m really disappointed. ATI castrated the card too much on the shaders and rops making the performance closer to the 5770 than to the 5850. On top of that, the card uses more power than the 5850 and is almost the same price!!! The 5850 is a much better option.

By the way, does anyone knows when can we expect ATI to cut the prices of their 5000 series??? A 5850/70 would fit very well on my system.

agree that was a huge let down, they could have made it at least 24.

$410 for the fastest single GPU solution and you think that's "ridiculous?"

Ever heard of the 8800 Ultra? MSRP just under $1000 ring a bell? Now THAT was ridiculous.

That is a valid point, to throw some DX11 game in there. Pripyat, maybe.

Anyway. Card sucks. Thought it would have 1280 or so shaders. Doesn't. Doesn't perform well at all. Even considering it's specs, it's odd how it barely beats a 4890 despite having more shaders.

Just a weird card. But then so was the 4830. Probably should just call it a 5790.

The 8800Ultra's were a bit like the ASUS GTX295 MARS, just for the hell of it.

i was looking to this card as a possible replacement for my 4870 which has been acting up on me. unfortunately it looks like it would be more of a sidestep than an upgrade. near 5850 price for a card that is marginally faster than a 5770/4890...if it were 30-40 USD cheaper maybe i would get one.

at lest it looks to oc well...anyone know if you can adjust the voltages with AB?

Comparing to the MARS is not fair. The MARS is a limited edition, completely different from any other card, card. It wasn't a real 295. It was two GTX 285 cores, while the real 295 was basically GTX 275 ones. The MARS was a redone card...

The Ultra was a production model which boasted only higher clock speeds.

It's all about the adjectives my friend. :)

    vs
But yeah, mostly all video cards are made like that. But with the case of ATI, ati cut off one cluster of shaders for the 5850, and 2 clusters of shaders of the 5830. Where as Nvidia on the other hand, used different cores based on the same architecture for the different series from the start.

i wonder how the 5770 would compair to this if the 5770 had 256bit memory bandwidth ? , i think the 5770 would be faster ?

The 5770 is not memory limited

    So probably not.

Great review :) , a little dissapointed here as well , for a few more dollars you can get yourself a 5850 wich its a much better buy in my oppinion. Look at that 5850 go ;)
