    Is your system overclocked?
    Did this happen just once?

My system is not overclocked all @ stock and I've restarted a lot of times even on safe mode even if I chose diagnostic start up @ msconfig so I'm stumped now

you can try to open the PC and see if every components are still well in place. (press a bit on GC, memory modules...) and look at SATA and power cable.

Reset your CMOS, it may be corrupt or have a setting that makes your PC malfunction.
Dont forget to set the boot drive and AHCI etc if you have changed them before.

Unplug any USB memory or hard drives, they can cause boot issues.

Failing that, when you eventually get into Windows, check the event log to see if it says what caused the hold up.

    Hdd!?

Sounds like your HDD is bad. But do as Mono06 said, check the sata cable they tend to come loss sometimes. I had one do almost the same thing, took 30 minutes to get into windows had bad sectors on the platter, most likely where your OS is copied on the platter.

System Restore, Microsoft pushed some big updates couple of days back and some were for malicious files and if your system was compromised the behavior you described would be typical.

Well I didn't install Wndows the only thing that helped was to create a new user and use that account as my login. Now my PC is as good as new. Thanks guys

What does Event Viewer report once you get to the desktop?

Control Panel > Admin Tools > Event Viewer (open to Custom Views > Administrative Events)
