Same here. Crysis1/WH or metro2033 mean nothing to me anymore, and these are the only games I cant max out with a reasonable bit of AA. Plus I dont necessarily max out every game I play, even if I could, due to visual preference. I dont like motion blur for example. Ultra shadows dont do much for me in many games (vs high or medium shadows). Quite content with 4xAA in most games. So dont see any point in a new GPU atm. Doesnt mean I wont get impulsive and buy one, but it wont be born out out of a real need for one.

Maybe the intended price point of £400 made them rename the card to GTX 680 to infer it was a higher-end successor to their GTX 580? It would have been interesting though if NVIDIA had released the card as a GTX 670 Ti at £350 or less and referred to it as mid-range because of how it compares with AMD's own more expensive high-end HD 7970.

Ultimately though, it doesn't matter because most people interested in buying these cards know that the GTX 680 isn't going to be the high-end Kepler card. For me, the name at least makes it feel like I've bought a worthy upgrade to my GTX 580 without rubbing in the fact it's really mid-range.

What? I lost it at the 9800 series..
Everything beyond that are just random mixed numbers that don't make sense anymore..

The gk104 was supposed to be mid-range but when Nvidia saw the performance of their rival and their mid range compared to it, hey why not milk it and put this as 680 and release the real high-end chip gk110 685/780 in 6 months and get another helping of high-end $$$. Done it before and worked, so why not do it again. Its business and that's how it works since people fall for it and pay up. Also, so we can stop the bickering of 685 or 780 cause nobody really knows whats gonna happen, just do what I did, 685/780.

Regardless if it was supposed to be mid range or not, the simple fact that the GTX680 is nearly twice the performance of the previous generation is simply outstanding. IMHO, considering the difference in performance, the price for the GTX680 is more than fair. Nvidia could easily price the card at $600, and I guarantee you that it still would sell like hot cakes.

The only other time I recall ever seeing a performance jump of nearly 2x compared to the previous generation was with the GTX2/HD4 and the GTX4/HD5.

In every thread for the GTX 680 the same people keep blabbing on about "the GTX 680 is supposed to be GTX 670" no sh1t, everyone knew this a month before it was released..people are still going to buy it, it's not like AMD is doing any better releasing a card for $550 that is barely faster than a GTX 580...IMO the 7970 should have been released for ~$300 like the 4870 & 5870 that way this GK104 would've been released for around that price and still be called a GTX 670.

The GTX 260 was $400 & GTX 280 was $600 before the HD 4870 was released.

The 4870 was faster than the GTX 260 and sometimes a few FPS slower than a GTX 280 causing nvidia to drop prices considerably.

what does these old cards have to do with anything? amd smartened up. I think they are done with that kinda pricing. really pricing a 7970 200+ cheaper than a 580 is not the best business decision.

No. gtx680 is about 25% to 30% faster than gtx580, so not twice.

As others have stated, the GTX680 was originally supposed to be the GTX670Ti, so comparing it to the GTX580 isn't an entirely accurate comparison. From the benchmarks I've seen, the GTX680 is about 1.5x - 1.75x more powerful than the GTX570. Also, I never said it was 2x more powerful, I said it's nearly 2x more powerful.

With that said, you can get a GTX680 for less than what it would cost for 2 GTX570, and get the same performance or possibly even better performance depending on the game.

19% over the stock 580 and 37% over the 480 spell 28nm mid end. But it's twice as fast as the 460...it's 2010 counterpart.

well if you compared it to a mid range 560ti I would believe that but a 570 is only about 15-20 percent slower than a 580. nealy 2x more powerful is not 50%-75% in my book. it is more like 85-95% in my book

Try looking at individual benchmark results sometime. Averaging out performance across multiple titles is never as accurate as looking at the results from each game. In more than a few benchmarks, the GTX680 is bottlenecked, which will skew the results.

The only games where the GTX570 is marginally slower than the GTX680 are in DX11 titles with tessellation. However, both you and I know that the majority of the games don't use DX11, much less tessellation.

I`m having trouble finding benches where the 680 has nearly double the performance of a 570. can you perhaps link them for me?

    Remove the spaces

The majority of the tests here show the GTX680 being about 45% faster than the GTX570. Not quite double, but definitely considerable.
